Sasha walked purposefully toward the next intersection. Looking around, discreet as always, she made sure no one was watching before ducking into an ally. Hopefully that would be enough to drop the police “escort” that had been dogging her steps since her last deal had fallen through. She didn't even see the corpse until she stepped over it.

The face was beyond recognition, blown away by the explosion of ammunition shot from close range, but plenty of ID had been left behind. The kid had been military, and female. Sasha pulled out the dog tags and flipped them over a couple times in her hands, watching from the corner of her eye as the cops she'd been evading walked straight past the ally. She took it as a sign.

Pulling the tags off the body, she shoved them into her own pocket, then hunted for anything more that might be helpful. Enough nights in a row sleeping in cold and shit with an empty stomach made the job of picking over dead bodies considerably easier. She ran drugs to keep herself fed and warm, since her parents had died before she'd had a chance to know them. But she hated it. Underneath the veneer of social and economic variation, they were all the same, those balls of dirt and despair that the majority of humanity called home. People ran around like so many fleas, biting and scratching and inflicting themselves upon each other, each fighting for a bit of globe to call their own. Her home was in the stars, and a military identity would give her that. Whatever this person had been before, Sasha knew she could teach her to fly.

Whoever'd whacked this kid hadn't been interested in anything but killing her, it seemed. Maybe it had even been a suicide. The lack of a gun meant nothing in this neighborhood. No one in their right minds would pass up a free military sidearm. She found a wallet, complete with ID and enough cubits to feed herself prime rib for the rest of the week. Better yet were the assignment papers. The girl had already gotten them through the Fleet Academy, and landed them a position on a Battlestar. It was just a marine position, but Sasha seemed to remember hearing about the Galactica somewhere before. If even she'd heard of it, probably out at the ass-end of nowhere, then it had to be a respectable assignment, and about as far from drug running as she could possibly get.

She was whistling when she sauntered out of the alley. A uniform and a new ID with her own picture and Louanne Katrain's information on it would be easy enough to obtain. The rest would be worth it.
