Asuka made her way over to the building where the Vri floor was located quickly and carefully. She was still nervous about going outside, with all of the dangerous people out there and especially after everything that had happened recently, but this would be worthwhile. They were at war here, after all, much as no one belonged here. If she could do anything to at least try to make sure that those she cared about survived long enough that they could return to where they belonged when this was all over, then it would be worthwhile.

After a few minutes, she made her way to the door to Vri-Epta, and knocked.

"Come on in!" Lina called from her room. She was reasonably certain that whoever was out there was the same girl who had been asking about wards, but if it wasn't, well... what better demonstration would there be to show how effective her spells were at keeping out trouble?

She entered the apartment and made her way over to where the voice had come from. When she got there, she greeted politely, "Hi. I'm Tenjoin Asuka - we spoke over the communicators about wards."

Lina looked up at her and did a double-take.

"Oh. Huh," she said. "For a second I thought you were someone else. Your copy took some lessons from me too, you know."

"Ah, sorry," Asuka replied, slightly on the sheepish side. "It can get confusing, with two of us here. I'm the younger one."

So this was who had taught the other her how to do the healing spell she'd seen her practicing on occasion, then.

"Right," Lina replied. "I'm Lina Inverse. You've probably heard of me by now." She gave her hair a little toss before continuing, "Anyway, come in and sit down, and I'll start showing you the basics."

"It's nice to meet you," Asuka replied, and she entered and sat down as Lina had asked. She wasn't completely sure exactly what to expect, having never tried to learn any kind of magic before, but she would do her best.

Lina shoved a piece of paper and a stick of chalk toward Asuka.

"We'll start with a little one, first," she said. "To explain: wards are magical objects, designed to keep out anything that might hurt you. The other side of a ward is a seal, which you'd use to hold on to something you want to keep in. They're about the same, except for the details. The nice thing about them is that they're magic by themselves, so you don't need any special talent to make one work. You can make them as powerful as you want as long as you've got room for them - the bigger they are, the stronger they are. You follow?"

Accepting the chalk and paper, Asuka listened carefully to Lina's explanation, making sure to pay careful attention.

With a nod, she replied, "It makes sense so far."

"Good. Demonstration time," said Lina. She took a piece of paper and a piece of chalk for herself, and carefully drew a design onto the paper, making it as large as she could. In the empty place in the center of the design, she placed a folded paper bird. With a whispered word, she conjured a tiny fireball and flicked it at the paper. It smacked into an invisible shield and fizzled into smoke, leaving the paper bird without so much as a scorch.

"See? Nothing to it," she said. "See if you can copy that without making any mistakes."

Though the kind had varied from source to source, Asuka wasn't completely new to the concept of magic, having seen some kinds in use before; still, she couldn't help but be amazed by both the ward and the fire that Lina had created. And seemingly without any effort on the other's part - she was definitely quite skilled, if that hadn't been assumed and/or obvious before.

Nodding, Asuka took up the chalk and began to make her best attemt to copy what Lina had drawn. She took her time, and her attempt had a few imperfections, but she did her best.

Lina leaned over Asuka's shoulder, perusing the design.

"You left a gap there," she said. "It's not going to keep things out very well if you leave holes in it."

"Ah, I did?" Asuka compared her work to Lina's demonstration again and found that she had, in fact, left a gap accidentally, and in a couple of spaces even. She corrected her mistakes and looked the two drawings over again, just to make sure she hadn't missed anything else.

"Much better," said Lina. "You can hang on to those if you want, to practice with or whatever. The wards will work on pretty much anything you can draw or paint on. If I were you, I'd be decorating the walls."

Asuka nodded. "I'll do that. Thank you very much."
