And then there were those who were participating in neither, and were simply going about their business as though it were any other day. Rose was, perhaps unsurprising given her origins, one of those. She wandered through the plaza, head down as she fiddled with, of all things, a cell phone. It had been a habit of hers off and on the past several weeks, on the vague hope it might pick up something. So far, she'd had absolutely no luck. This was not at all unanticipated.
The odd-looking young man in the plaza's center caught her attention, and she pocketed the phone in favor of heading over, head cocked at a curious angle and a slight, amiable smile on her face. "Hey there," she called. "Looking for anything in particular?"
"Not really." Brainy replied, layman's terms, casual. He cast a glance over to her, his eyes scanning her up and down briefly, immediately affirming, from both her accents and base features, of her ethnic heritage. "I'm merely observing the other residents in their holiday ritual."
The distraction helped him think, and watching the others, their habits and subtleties helped him learn, to help him better serve the community.
"The Thanksgiving thing?" The blonde grinned, shaking her head as though in mild bemusement. "At least they've stopped arguing back and forth about whether or not it's okay for them to celebrate. Honestly, some people." She rocked back on her heels, eying him with undisguised curiosity. "I'm sure someone wouldn't mind you joining. I mean, if you wanted first-hand observation."
"I believe a teammate of mine will be hosting his own meal." He said, his expression barely shifting. He did however offer a polite nod to her statement as he straightened himself. "I should be attending."
He regards her with measurable amount of curiosity, really only wondering why she was so interested in him.
He might as well offer an introduction. "My name is Brainiac 5. You?" He said, offering his hand to shake. Gesture of good will.
"I'm Rose Tyler," Rose replied, giving him another friendly smile as she drew her hand out of the protective warmth of her coat pocket to shake his. "Well, I'm one of them, that is. Nice t'meet you. --So you've got friends here, then, from your own universe? That must be a bit of a comfort, in a place like this."
"Hm. I see. So you too, have a double?" Interesting, but no longer a surprise. He shook her hand and nodded. "I do. Invisible Kid, Phantom Girl and my own double, as well as Nightwing, Dani and Naoki." He said, frowning at the loss of lightning Lad.
"Yeah," Rose replied. She buried her hand back in her pocket, reminding herself yet again to actually requisition the gloves she'd kept forgetting about. "Or, well, I don't think she's gone and vanished, but we haven't really talked much." There was a faint note of chagrin evident in her reply. Try as she might, she couldn't entirely get over the vague discomfort of having someone else walking around who was, in essence, her while at the same time being someone completely different.
Sometimes, she really did wish Mickey was around, so she could compare notes with him.
"I understand. Querl is far too... different. I have no reason to feel any discomfort regarding his existence. But I can understand how you might feel at unease." Brainy replied.
"It's not that," Rose replied swiftly, even though it absolutely was. It sounded bad stated so baldly, however. She wasn't sure why it sounded bad, because she was sure it had to be a common enough dilemma, but it did. "It's just, what do you talk to yourself about, y'know? Especially if you've got to worry about causing trouble if you say the wrong thing."
"Uncertain. That is for you to determine. If you feel it's necessary, I would rechomend spending time with your duplicate to learn more about her, then, int he future, conversation will come... easier." Brainy replied. He had no such problem communicating with Querl as they were on the exact same level. He was, however, more experienced then he was, older, perhaps even wiser.
"That's not quite..." She trailed off, shaking her head to negate the beginning of the reply, settling instead on, "It's complicated." Which was an understatement of epic proportions, as far as she was concerned. "You seem a bit...used to this sort of thing. Is it just being here, or d'you have experience with it from your own dimension?" Discomfort was not nearly enough to quash her curiosity, apparently.
"It would have been unexpected in my time. The 31st Century however, very little is impossible, just highly unlikely." He replied. He understood her sentiments, all things considered.
The odd-looking young man in the plaza's center caught her attention, and she pocketed the phone in favor of heading over, head cocked at a curious angle and a slight, amiable smile on her face. "Hey there," she called. "Looking for anything in particular?"
