Atem stumbled and almost fell when Jing grabbed her shoulders, but she quickly recovered, and looked at herself in the water, wondering what he was playing at. At first, a stray breeze rippled the water, making her reflection dance and sway, before the water stilled, and she could see her face clearly. At first, she did wonder if Toshi had seen anything in her, before taking a harder look. True, there were the cat ears, flicking constantly as if they had a life of their own. But Toshi had loved playing with them; any chance he had, he'd stroke them, making her twitch and giggle, and bat playfully at his hand.

Then the wind rippled across the water again, breaking the spell.

"I can name one thing, one thing you'll never understand," she said. "Me. For all my faults, he loved me. Warts and all. He took the good with the bad." She forced herself away from Jing's hold and turned to face him. "That's what love is about, and that's the way Toshi loved me, right up until the end. And if he were here, he'd say the same thing."

(OOC: Is she allowed to get in one last hit? 'Cause she's itching to knock him flat still XD)

"Maybe," Jing said, allowing her to break from his hold without trying to reestablish it. "But that could just mean you're both idiots."

But that wasn't what he thought, of course. And maybe a little part of him was actually trying to get Atem to affirm what she knew instead of moping about the possibilities that surely had to have been running through her head since Toshi had disappeared. On the surface, however, it just looked like he was merely antagonizing her.

[OOC: Go for it. Make it a dirty hit, he deserves it.]

"Maybe," Atem said icily, "but I know one thing. He did love me, and irregardless of anything else, he would never leave me willingly. So if you think for a minute he'd leave me because he couldn't stand to be around me anymore, you'd better be thinking again. Oh wait, you won't have room to think after this."

A slight shifting was all the warning she gave, before she lifted her foot, and kicked Jing square in the privates, putting every last ounce of strength she had into the kick. It was a low blow, but she didn't care; he'd asked for it!

(OOC: Dirty enough for ya? XD)

Jing had good reflexes, but he only managed to get himself partially blocked before Atem landed the true weapon against all mankind. As it was, he emitted a rather strangled yell, folding practically in half to protect himself from any further blows in... sensitive areas. He'd kept himself from becoming temporarily crippled in agony, but he sure wasn't getting up any time soon.

He hissed out a very un-Jing-like mutter of curses, something he'd likely picked up from his Kir at some point in the past and which probably would've traumatized his partner to hear repeated.

"Same old Atem," he gasped out.

Atem would've given him another kick, just on principle, but despite her current state of mind, she still followed the golden rule; never kick a foe while they're down. So she settled for giving the filthiest look imaginable, before stepping over him and stalking off. It was time to find somewhere else to go brood.

Jing wasn't in any condition to stop her even if he'd wanted to, and it would several long, long minutes before he'd even attempt to get to his feet again, and even after that would be moving very gingerly.

But kneeling on the ground he watched the angry female stalk off, he was sad as well as in pain.

"You didn't let me down, my friend," he said under his breath, the much-delayed response to the conversation in her journal where he'd said he'd be counting on her. "I can pay this price for you and the others."
