Pegasus had a pretty fair idea of what he'd find waiting for him when he got home. He quietly let himself into his room, and was not at all surprised to find Siegfried there putting on a fine display of self-pity. Pegasus sat down next to him and began stroking his hair.

Whatever else anyone could say about Siegfried, he at least did know how to put on a fine display. He sighed yet again and tilted his head so that he could give Pegasus his best look of heart-wrenching sadness.

"There, there, it's all right," said Pegasus soothingly. "Anyone could see there is nothing lacking in your skill."

Pegasus could say whatever he wished, but that still didn't change the duel's outcome. "Yet again the von Schroiders come in second to Kaiba," he muttered despondently.

"To a god," Pegasus corrected. "No one could reasonably expect you to stand against that. It's no failing of yours that she played an unfair advantage against you."

Some of the despondency left Siegfried as he turned suddenly thoughtful. His eyes narrowed as he studied Pegasus. "Ah, you are correct... An advantage most unfair..."

"Indeed," said Pegasus. "I've often regretted ever designing those cards... Uh-oh, I see that look in your eyes. You're plotting something."

"But you did design them... You do design cards. It should be well within your talents to craft a new God card!" Siegfried plotted and planned now, knowing that if he had a God card of his own, he could meet Kaiba - any Kaiba - on an even playing field.

Pegasus shook his head slowly. "They're gods Siegfried, and I ama mere mortal. I can't create a god. I only made them a dwelling place, and they came to dwell in it. Much to my dismay."

"Surely there are more gods who would like a place to roost," Siegfried countered stubbornly. If Pegasus could create three god cards, there was no reason why he couldn't make more. With so many pantheons, surely one god would be willing...

"Absolutely not. I know better than that," said Pegasus, a bit sharply. "Those things aren't toys, they're dangerous. The gods do not obey men."

Once an idea had hold of Siegfried, he didn't let it go easily. Nor did he play fairly. "Did you not tell me I could ask of you anything?"

"If it was in my power, yes," said Pegasus, "but this isn't something I can do. You don't even know what you're asking for. Those cards aren't safe, and I'm not giving you anything that could harm you."

Frustrated and thwarted, Siegfried jerked away from Pegasus. It was the behavior of a child being told that he couldn't have a new toy, but that didn't matter to Siegfried at the moment. "You design these cards! You can make whatever you please of them!"

"You don't know what you're talking about," Pegasus snapped. It wasn't easy to make him angry, but he was getting there quickly. "You think a card is nothing but a piece of paper with a pretty picture printed on it. With that kind of attitude, it's no wonder you keep losing."

Pegasus's words stung sharply at Siegfried's pride. Of course he knew the cards were more! Pegasus had driven that point home quite well when explaining how he'd lost an eye. Although he hid the pain of Pegasus's words behind a mask of haughtiness - the easiest sort of mask for Siegfried to hide behind - he still lashed back.

"You were willing to risk everything you had for her, but you will not even try for me!" Siegfried snarled. "It is so nice to know where I rank with you."
