Mai hadn't been able to stand it. She had to bury her emotions quickly, but it had felt like they would well up to soon. It was to much for her to be able to handle on her own. Even after she awoke, she felt like she hadn't breathed till she was sure Zuko and Azula were alive as well.

And now she was to see Zuko. She hadn't bothered about looking dignified. She ran. She ran as fast as she could to get to the office building roof top. And after opening the door, she paused, staring at Zuko.

No blood. No wound. He had life.

"Zuko..." Mai said and rushed forward, wrapping her arms tightly around him. It wasn't in her nature to be so emotional, but then again, she never had something so horrible happen to her before.

The flame engulfing his hand was bent away as he saw her, opening his arms and wrapping them around her in a fierce embrace when she reached him. He held her tightly to him, as if she would fade away if he let go. Zuko remembered the look on her face as he died, the hurt and the pain, the emotions she wouldn't have dared showed under any other circumstances; he hated that he'd been unable to say anything to her and had tried to so hard to do so, but with no avail. But, none of that mattered anymore, for he was alive and she was in his arms. That nightmare was, for now, over.

He drew back after a moment and seized her face with his hands, pressing a quick, firm kiss to her lips. One hand remained on her cheek while the other slipped into her hair. He leaned forward to press his forehead to hers and closed his eyes, swallowing roughly. "I thought I was gone for good..."

Mai didn't loosen her hold. She didn't want to let him go again. Losing him twice before had hurt, but for him to die? It was thousands, millions of times worse.

"Zuko..." Mai whispered, trying to keep from breaking down in relief. It was just such a relief to see him alive! To be able to touch him and hold him and kiss him again. "I love you." She said and kissed him again.

Zuko returned the kiss eagerly, but drew back after a moment. "I love you, too," he said, "and I hate that I waited so long to tell you. I should've said it sooner--it shouldn't have taken a truth serum to make me say it. All that I did...leaving the Fire Nation, what will or won't or did happen at the Boiling Rock...I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you."

"I know." Mai said, burying her face against his shoulder. "I know and I forgive you...just...please don't leave again." She whispered, her voice more desperate than she'd ever allow it to be before.

"I...can't promise you that. Who I am and the things I need to do put death out there as a possibility. I can't promise you that I won't die again. I left the Fire Nation knowing that I could die and willing to do so."

He sighed and pulled her closer to him, a hand moving up to rest at the back of her neck.

"That's why stepped in the way. Why I saved Azula. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to continue and not do something stupid if she wasn't around. But, I knew that she was strong enough to move on without me. And I knew that you would understand that I wanted you to continue, as well."

"...I know." Mai said quietly, her shoulders starting to shake a bit. She was being irrational. She was being overly emotional. She knew she was and it felt wrong to feel like she was. Wrong as in she wasn't used to it, but...it was hard not to be.

"It...just hurt."

The prince may've seemed cool and collected on the outside, but on the inside, it was an entirely different story. Zuko was shaken and disturbed, traumatized by what had happened to him and unsure of how to deal with it. But, for the moment, he put the urge to quell his mind to the side and instead focused on his girlfriend. It was so out of character for her to be so emotional, but he understood why and would've honestly been surprised if she wasn't acting this way. For her, he'd keep a level head and a cool front. It was about time he started taking initiative and acting like the man he was.

"I know, dearest, I know," he said, stroking her hair soothingly. "And I'm sorry you had to see that."

Mai didn't know what to say. She couldn't think of anything to say. It was just so confusing. All of this emotional turmoil wasn't her, but it happened.

So she chose to just hold onto Zuko until her body could stop shaking and it fully sunk in that he was THERE and ALIVE.

"We don't have to talk about it anymore," he said gently. "I'm alive--we're alive. And that's what matters."

Zuko didn't let go of her, though, but did draw back enough to kiss her again.

Alive. Yes, alive. They were all alive. And as long as they were, they could do...something. Something to survive and do what they need to and be together.

Mai was happy with that and kissed him back, the contact reassuring.

Even though Zuko said they didn't have to talk about it anymore, there were a few questions nagging at the back of his mind that just wouldn't go away. He sighed heavily against her lips and drew away, frowning some.

"Mai...over the PDAs...they're saying that everyone died. Did..." He sighed again, reaching up to run a hand against the hair that was drawn back into a sloppy, looped sort of ponytail. "How did you die?"

Mai was silent for a few moments in response. "I was a second to slow to get out of the way of a bolt." Mai said in a low tone. It hadn't been pleasant, at all.

Zuko resumed stroking her hair, frowning at her words and hating that he was pressing her for information, but he just had to know. "...and Azula? What about Ami--I mean, Mercury?"

"Mercury had left after you..." Mai trailed off, silent a few moments. "...Azula died after me."

How Zuko hated that they had been through something like that. It was unfair to all involved--the dying, the witnessing, the blood and the horror. What sort of lesson was meant to be taught by showing them that sort of vision? Fear the Entropi? Whatever. He'd be weary, but he wouldn't fear them. Especially now that the cuff was off. That scenario they were put through had them without any powers. With his bending, he had a chance against them thanks to a technique taught to him by his uncle that had already proved useful against his father.

He held Mai tighter to him. "It won't happen again. Not here. I promise you."
