He sat on a rock by the lakeshore, his sugarloaf hat and the canopy of trees above granting him dual refuge from the afternoon sun. The cat-headed staff in his right hand seemed to hiss down at the nonexistent fish swimming before him. Somber blue eyes followed the voyage of a fallen leaf sailing its way across the water, until it passed under the stone bridge and completely left his sight.
Solomon Kane brought up one leg to rest on a smaller rock, leaning against his staff. Would that he were so fortunate with Sheifa. He could have gone on avoiding her, dodging her every attempt at finding him and truly welcoming him into her heart. But something in her latest entry had drawn his eye. It was the tone of one who was in some great measure of distress and just needed someone to hear her out.
And pretend as he might, the wanderer cared about her too much to stand aside and leave her in such a state. Just like when he had deigned to ensure her mother would not prevail by helping her vanquish the curse.
Something changed in the wind blowing through the grass behind him. It wasn't just a shift in its very flow; it also carried a scent of perfume he knew fairly well.
