Having just finished taking some deep breaths and bolting down a bit of the meat she carried, the still-mutant Scully came face-to-face with a power she hadn't seen anything like for a long time, not since...

...well, not since her son died.

"Oh my god," she breathed, transfixed at the sight. Might William have grown up capable of such a feat? She felt tears begin to wet her lower lashes, and forcefully blinked them back.

Only a few years ago, she might not have believed what she was seeing. She would have found a way to explain it, rationalize it, quantify it within normal boundaries. She might have chalked it up to the lingering effects of high levels of radiation, or exposure to an unknown narcotic. Now, however, all she could do was stare and be shaken at the enormity of the event.

"Oh, Mulder. You should be here now to see this." Her voice was hushed but thick. "You should be here."

"It's amazing!" Tails exclaimed as he walked over. "I don't think I've ever seen someone with power like that before." And Tails had seem a lot in the time he'd known Sonic.

He came to stand next to Scully, eyes transfixed on the sight before him, though it did seem that this observation was at least partially directed at her.

Scully had to blink several times to be sure, but it seemed that she was indeed being addressed by an anthropomorphic fox.

An anthropomorphic fox dressed like Robin Hood.

Did everything here feel the need to shake the very foundations upon which she set the world?

She quickly cleared her throat, and snuck a hand upwards to brush her eyes dry. "I have," she replied, somewhat shaky. It was inevitable that she'd end up divulging her past at some point; how much of it was still her decision.

"Really?!" Tails asked, sounding very curious, until he looked up and noticed she seemed to be trying not to cry. Then he sounded concerned. "Um, are you okay ma'am?"

Scully did her best to give Tails a reassuring smile. "I'm fine," said. Which is what she always said when she was hurt or in trouble. The only difference was that here and now, nobody knew her well enough to call her on it.

"I had a son who could do this sort of thing, but on a much smaller scale," she said, choosing her words carefully. No need to upset (what looked to be) a little kid with stories of government experiments.

"I see." Tails said. Tails didn't know Scully, this was true, but he also had a best friend who happened to also say "I'm fine" when he really wasn't. He also noted the "could," which could have just been a turn of phrasing.

He decided not to push her though. "I've never seen someone do something like this before unaided, but there are a few artifacts in my world that could do similar things. Like the Master Emerald. Back home it's used to keep a whole island a float in the sky. Most people don't think it exists, but I've seen it with my own eyes."

Scully's eyes widened. "There's something like that where I come from, too. It's called the Artifact." How should she tone down her experiences for the ears of a child? "It has...things written on it in an unidentified language. It was buried under the sand, at a beach far from where I lived. It wasn't used for anything when I found it, but it was made to travel through the sky." She paused.

"And through space."

"Wow! That's really neat!" Tails said with his eyes widening. Tails of course had noticed that Scully wasn't telling him the whole story, but he was so used to being treated like an equal by people older than him that he thought she didn't want to go into detail for other reasons. "Well, the Master Emerald could probably be used for space travel too, but I've never actually seen it used that way. The Chaos Emeralds have been used that way by humans, but only as a power source, like when Doctor Eggman used the to power his space station." Tails meanwhile, really had no qualms about letting Scully know about his own adventures.

Scully smiled, but only inside her mind: children always managed to effect her emotions, but she didn't often display what she was feeling to the world. She was so used to having to defend herself against misogynistic coworkers that she rarely gave anyone a foothold into her thoughts.

Then there were the things he was saying, something about space stations and an egg man (surely he was too young to know songs by the Beatles?). She assumed he was describing an imaginary game he liked to play, perhaps with his friends, and was so certain that she didn't think to ask if that was the case. Sure, she knew children who had lived extraordinary lives--Gibson Praise, the telepath, came to mind--but it was always due to something they couldn't control, something an outside force wanted to manipulate to their own ends. It was never pleasant for the children involved.

"Your world sounds exciting," she commented. "Are any of the people you know from back home here with you?"

When Scully had commented on Tails' world sounding exciting, he caught on that she didn't really believe him and briefly gave her a look that said he'd noticed and was only slightly annoyed by it, but the look quickly disappeared at her question. He really wasn't used to being treated like a kid, but the humans back home tended to understand that his kind matured mentally a bit more quickly than human children, even if those like Sonic didn't always act like it.

He nodded, smiling a little. "My best friend, Sonic, is here and so are two versions of Shadow, though neither one of them is from the same universe. No one else though. What about you? Anyone you know here?"

Scully took a quiet, calming breath, but through her nose so as to not make it obvious. "No," she said simply, being careful so as to not betray anything she might be feeling. She kept her eyes on the spectacle in front of her. "I'm by myself here."

After a pause, she smiled down at Tails. "I had a friend back in my world, and I think he would have liked you very much. His name was Fox," she explained.

"Oh." Tails said quietly.

However, when she mentioned her friend named Fox however, he couldn't help, but giggle. "Really?"

"Really," she replied. "He wasn't fond of it, though: he even made his parents call him Mulder. That was his last name," she ammended, recalling that Tails wouldn't have a clue why he was referred to as such.

"He would have been fascinated by you. Creatures such as yourself don't exist where we lived. There are foxes, but they lack sapience. They're just ordinary animals." A small, thoughtful smile unfolded upon her face. "He was always looking for proof of things beyond the scope of normal human understanding. I think he would have been a better choice to fight for this world than myself."
