happy new year

For a long time, New Year's Eve meant watching the Twilight Zone marathon, when it was on local station WPIX-11. Since it migrated to the Sci Fi Channel, it was inaccessible to me most years, plus I tended to go out and make social plans(!). And now that I have the DVDs, there's even less incentive to tune in for the syndicated versions with commercials. But I still can't shake the happy holiday association with one of my favorite shows. Are you watching any of it? According to the online schedule, I highly recommend peeking in from 6pm to midnight, to get a sampling of the best and most classic episodes (many of which have been parodied in The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" episodes:

06:00 PM LONG DISTANCE CALL
06:30 PM LITTLE GIRL LOST
07:00 PM THE ODYSSEY OF FLIGHT 33
07:30 PM THE HITCH-HIKER
08:00 PM EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
08:30 PM WHERE IS EVERYBODY
09:00 PM WILL THE REAL MARTIAN PLEASE STAND UP?
09:30 PM THE OBSOLETE MAN
10:00 PM TO SERVE MAN
10:30 PM THE MASKS
11:00 PM THE INVADERS
11:30 PM THE MIDNIGHT SUN (program schedulers, well done!)
12:00 AM FIVE CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN EXIT

The best thing about owning the DVDs is getting to watch a lot of the infrequently rerun episodes, especially from the hour-long seasons. They aren't all great, but many of them are still very good and worth seeing.

If The Twilight Zone isn't your thing (WHO are you?), you could go for something completely different: HBO's True Blood marathon from 6pm-5am. I just started watching the series (I'm up to episode 3) and I'm digging it so far, even though it's a little squicky in places.

Whatever you're up to, have a safe and happy celebration! See you in 2009.
