Settling In At CAMSPAC

CAMSPAC is turning out to be a pretty neat place! I'm still a bit surprised by how small it is in relation to the TRACEN. For the past six and a half years I was used to working in a large building with many floors and rooms, and that nestled amongst many other large buildings in one big complex. Here, though... there's the operations deck, an admin office, some rooms for the officers, and that's about it. I don't know if the place IS small, but that's just how I perceive it.

The drive in to work is beautiful, not to mention the area. I'm right on the water at Point Reyes, just a few minutes away from the Point Reyes Lighthouse. Unfortunately the drive is also an hour long and eats up about a quarter of a tank of gas just to get there and back home. So I am thinking of the possibility of getting a motorcycle. I'm not a rider right now, and I've talked a bit with Bfly and Nancy about the possibility. Bfly's advice was great - take a riding course first, and then figure out if riding is something I'd want to do. Fortunately the Coast Guard will repay me for taking a riding course and getting that "M" on my license... so it can't hurt. I've been browsing through Craigslist and it looks like there are a lot of beginner bikes being sold in my area for around $1500, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I guess I'll find out after I take the course!

I'm slowly learning the ropes of my job, which surprisingly has a lot of responsibility. I'm rather excited to jump into it, although it'll still take me about two months to get qualified. Beginning next week I'll be starting break-in watches - two on, two off, with sliding weekends. So essentially I work 5 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday, then work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. o_o But then I'm off Monday and Tuesday, work Wednesday and Thursday, then off of work until the following Monday. Then the cycle starts again. It may take me a while to get used to the hours, but I'm looking forward to it!
