What: An takes Kaidoh around the festival
The festival seemed like fun, but Kaidoh Kaoru was nervous. You couldn't really tell by looking at him if you were passing by, but his shoulders hunched just a bit as he walked through the dorm, his eyes cast low. Occasionally, he hissed his breath out, trying to calm himself before he met with Tachibana An.
She was cute. Really cute. He'd only talked to her for a total of ten minutes when she caught him up with the schoolwork, but he'd spent at least half of that just looking at her. She'd had to wave her hand in front of his face to snap his attention back, and he'd spent the rest of their time together hiding his blush and hissing quietly, a tic he tended to have when he was uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Hazue, his little brother, would have laughed at him. Hazue was still only in elementary school, but he could talk to girls easily. Even when he was young, Kaoru got tongue tied around them and and had a hard time not scaring them off. Spending a number of years getting put into skirts and teased at school because he looked like a girl when he was little had developed his defenses. It still took a lot of willpower for him not to deck any guy that had the balls to call him 'Kaoru-chan'.
So when he spotted the girl outside of the dorm where they'd agreed to meet, he had no idea what to say to her. She was going to show him around the festival, she'd said, but all he could think was that he was going to spend time with a really cute girl who was nice to him. All he could think to say was, "...Oi. Tachiba--An-san." He quickly corrected himself.
So far the week had felt much like dejavu, if only in the sense that things seem to be repeating themselves alot lately. Not that she minded since the things she had been repeating were all with different people.
Meeting Kaidoh the first time had been kinda funny, he just stared at her and blushed a lot. He was strange but he seemed nice.An just guessed the boy was really shy. The hissing was also odd but she got used to it.
So now she was meeting Kaidoh again and this time to go to the festival and maybe tell him more about the school. It was the least she could do for the poor guy. It was hard to just transfer in the middle of the school year. Hearing her name called, An turned her head to look up at Kaidoh. She smiled, " Hello, Kaoru-kun."
She was somehow even cuter when she smiled, and Kaoru felt his heart practically skip a beat when she said his name. He had to mentally berate himself, telling himself that he didn't know her well enough to think such things about her yet. He'd done that with his first-and-last girlfriend, who'd been cute enough that he'd somehow overlooked how overly exuberant and, well, annoying she'd been. Clingy, demanding, with deeply embarrassing outbursts to him in public. A huge, unpleasant distraction that quickly smothered whatever happiness he'd had of actually having a girlfriend.
Not that Tachibana An was going to be that way, but he had no business thinking that way. It embarrassed him that he was even having these thoughts, and he hissed softly in return, nodding to her and hoping he looked all right in his uniform.
An rose an eyebrow, there he went again. She seriously wondered if she some how made him uncomfortable, all An did was say hi to him. Oh well, sometimes she was never going to understand guys and the way they acted.
Pushing her hair back she looked to the direction of the festival, " So should we get going?"
"Yeah." He shoved his hands into his pockets and fell into step with her, trying to think of things to say as he looked out on the brightly colored booths and crowds of students.
"It looks fancier than the festivals at my old school." He could have kicked himself for how ignorant he sounded. Of course the festivals at the Academy would look better; it was a better school. He pulled a brief face that, unknownst to him, sent a couple of students back a few steps as they walked by.
Looking around the stands. she tried to figure out what they could do since she didn't really know Kaidoh all to well and he didn't exactly talk all to much.
"Well everyone worked hard on the festival to make it look nice." With the gardening club they had been working on most of the decorations for weeks and it made her smile when An saw how nicely everything looked.
He looked around himself. There were a few booths that looked interesting to him. He usually gravitated towards ones where he could test his skill or strength. But didn't girls usually not like those? Well, not to play. His only experience there was with his ex-girlfriend, and she'd really only liked that he always won the prizes she'd wanted. So he thought he should defer to An and follow wherever she wanted to go, since she was showing him around.
"Do you want to start here and look?" he asked.
The closest stand to them was the haunted house, and just looking at it made her laugh. "You want to go into the haunted house? I'm sure it wont be scary though." Nothing really scared her and some haunted house surely wasn't going to.
He swallowed, looking at it. On the outside it didn't look that freaky, but he had a history of not liking haunted houses. Even the cheap. corny ones.
But she'd asked, so he balled up his hands in his packets and tried to look casual as he shrugged. "If you want."
He just hoped there wasn't any ghosts or vampires or one of those cds playing with the wolves howling and the sounds of doors creaking and then being slammed shut. He really, really hated those.
An gave him a nod before grabbing one of his wrists. Kaidoh would be fine, he may be shy but he seemed tough to her. "Try not to cry when you get scared" She said teasingly while they walked into the dark carp. She could already hear that stupid music that they usually play in these things.
"I don't cry," he protested gruffly, pulled along. He just froze up or ran for the hills. But he told himself, as he always did, that it was just pretend, and put on by fellow students. Ghosts and vampires and creepy things like that didn't really exist and he could control himself.
He was glad she was holding onto him though. Just in case. The music was already making him cringe a little, brushing aside some fake spiderwebbing that got caught in his hair.
The haunted house made her laugh for the most part, what with people jumping out dressed like demons and ghost and with vampires asking for their blood, it was all really silly. Though it seemed that Kaidoh wasn't enjoying it to much, not with cringing and all the sounds he kept making.
He was doing a pretty good job of not freaking out. Even though everytime something jumped out at them, he froze until she tugged him along. He could see the faint light of the exit and was able to breathe in relief. He hadn't embarrassed himself too much, he thought.
Until someone jumped right out at them. All Kaoru could see was a flash of red and two sharp fangs. He stumbled back a step, heart in his throat, and his fist automatically swung towards the thing. It connected, flying a few feet away to clatter onto the ground ahead of them.
A big, plastic vampire bat, strung up to fly at people when they reached a certain point. He was still breathing hard from the adrenaline racing through his shocked system. At least he hadn't hit a person.
...He'd hit a rubber toy.
Every once and a while she glanced at him to make sure he was okay, who knew he was actually scared of this? But when Kaidoh moved back, she was still holding on to him and was surprised when she stumbled back with him."Kaoru-kun, what-" Then she heard the clang and saw the bat close by. Oh... "You know..If you really didn't like these sort of things you should have just told me." An wouldn't make fun of him, everyone had to be afraid of something, even her but she'd rather think she didn't.
He made for the exit then, rapidly, and since she was still holding onto him, he wound up dragging her along for the ride. He didn't stop right away when they were out, but kept walking until he couldn't hear the creepy music anymore. That accomplished, he shuddered and ran a hand over the back of his neck to smooth the hairs back down.
"....I'm okay."
annarisa: Being tugged again, she tried to hold him back but ended up being dragged as they ran through the exit and back outside. "Kaoru-kun, it's ok!" She said before letting go of his wrist and walking by his side. An frowned, "You don't look okay..." Kaidoh should have told her in the first place! Now she felt sort of bad about having him go inside.
He probably didn't. He was still slightly pale and refusing to look back, feeling his heartbeat slow back down. "No such thing as all that stuff," he muttered, a little ticked at his stupid fear. He never let anything else scare him. "I'm fine," he insisted, slowly untensing his muscles and relaxing.
Well, An wouldnt say she didn't believe in the supernatural but to make him feel better..."Of course they don't" Looking at his hand for a moment, she took it giving it a rub, " We won't do anything scary like that again okay, maybe we could get something to eat?"
He went from pale to instant blush as she rubbed his hand, hissing under his breath as he looked down at it. "Uh..okay. Right." He straightened, and strangely did feel better and able to shake the last bits of shock off.
Hearing the hiss she let go. Guess he didn't like being touched either all to much. "Sorry..So lets keep going? Theres a bunch of pretty tasty things around here." An wasn't exactly starving so she was fine with a snack, "Is there anything you might want?"
"I'm not very picky," he admitted, following her. Weird. He was still blushing a little, but he was calm now.
"Mmm, okay. I think I want some cotton candy."The stand was close by and the pink fluff looked rather tasty. Ordering one, she pulled some off and ate it happily, "Do you want some?"
Kaoru looked at it curiously. He'd never had it before. His parents were pretty stern about sweets when he was growing up. Sweets were not everday treats. But he nodded, holding out his hand.
Instead of putting some in his hand An brought it up to his mouth, "There you go."
He blinked at her for a moment, not understanding. When he did, his mouth fell open enough for her to feed it to him. If he wasn't blushing enough then, he only did more when his lips accidently closed around her finger.
An laughed lightly before pulling her finger away from his mouth, "I know it's good but try not to eat my fingers as well." Maybe for a normal girl that might have made her blush, the whole act of feeding him almost seemed like something you do on a date, but for An it just seemed normal to her.
"It was an accident," he said around the mouthful that was rapidly melting in his mouth.
"I know.Don't worry about it." She said pushing some more of the pink fluff into her mouth. "You like it?"
"Yeah. Is the blue one different?" he asked, swallowing what was now melted sugar in his mouth, nodding at the different colors of cotton candy.
Looking back at the stand, she shrugged,"Sometimes it does or sometimes it's just the coloring."
He was curious enough to try, and bought another large tuft of the blue-spun fluff. He tried it himself first, sucking the sugar crystals off of his lower lip. "Its different." He offered her a piece of it.
An smiled at his curiousness, " Guess this means I don't have to share now." She tried the blue fluff and gave a nod. "You're right."
"I'll share mine," he told her. It was good, but it was a lot of sugar. He could eat half, he thought. He just wasn't that accustomed to eating too much or too many treats.
"It's okay, I think I'll be able to barley finish mine anyways." An wasn't all to hungry so the cotten candy had been a perfect snack, " So.. why did you transfer here?" She didn't know to much about him and he was going to be her classmate, she need to know something about him at least.
Frowning down briefly at the amount of the stuff he was going to be stuck with now--he didn't like leaving anything to waste--Kaoru looked at her and considered the answer. No one wanted to hear about his problems, and he didn't want pity or anything like that. So he kept it simply. "My parents thought it would be a better place to be. More opportunities..."
That made sense. Most parents wanted that, " I see. Well...the school isn't that bad, just some of the girls here are crazy but you learn to ignore them." At least she could for the most part..
"Crazy? How crazy?" Kaoru had dealt with crazy girls before and didn't want to again.
An laughed patting his back with her empty hand, "Don't worry, they wont bother you. Half the girls here are obsessed with the night class." The only people they seemed to bother anyways were the sane females like her and Sakuno.
That made him relax with a slight hiss under his breath. "What's so great about the Night Class?"
An really didn't know how to answer him. For her the night class was just like them except they went to school in the evenings. " Well from what I've heard what makes them great is that they're nice on the eyes and thats pretty much it."
"That's stupid," he said without thinking, frowning.
"I guess but I have friends in the night class and they're really good guys." She said with a happy nod, though she did have to admit that she did have a crush on Akutsu at one point but that was different.
He almost said how stupid it was to like someone based on their looks...but then he'd be a hypocrite, wouldn't he? Instead he just nodded.
She stayed quiet for a moment just eating her cotton candy before smiling, "I'm sure you'll meet some of them soon and then you can make your own opinion...Hmm, you planning on joining any clubs?"
He nodded again. "Boxing," he answered.
"That's cool but try not to get to hurt, I don't want to see you all beat up." She said with a laugh, " I'm actually in Archery and the gardening club myself, they're nice."
"Archery isn't dangerous?
An rolled her eyes, " Not really since you're just hitting a target, it's only dangerous if you're aiming for someone."
Dumb question. He could have smacked himself. "Sorry...is it hard?"
"Mmm, it takes time to get really good and to be able to have good accuracy but I guess medium? It's not for everyone." An liked archery a lot, it relaxed her in a way and it allowed her to focus .
That sparked the idea of a challenge in him. "Maybe I should try it."
An blinked before smiling big, " That would be great! We're always looking for new members."
He almost tripped seeing that smile, and blushed. "Uh...yeah. I can do that. I have time."
Too busy eating her fluff she didn't really notice his almost fall, " We get together, Mondays,Wednesdays, and Thursdays if you're really interested."
"Yeah, sure." He stuffed his mouth full of cotton candy so that he didn't blurt out something else stupid.
An smiled to herself, Kaidoh really was an interesting guy and she was really looking forward to teaching him a few things in archery.
They were walking by one of those booths where you could win something if you knocked over a target. He stared at it and slowed down. Hanging in the prize area was a bandana in school colors that caught his eye, not to mention the game itself. It was the kind of game he always played with his friends when they went to festivals.
Having finished off her cotton candy, she threw the stick into a bin. There were plenty of games and the piles of stuffed animals were growing on her bed with everyday that she passed by the festival. You could say that she was really good at these game. Watching Kaidohs face and then to the banada she figured that he wanted it. " You want me to win you it?"
"I--huh?" He did a double take at her. "I can win it," he blinked. "I'm good at these."
An laughed, it was odd for a girl to say something like that but she was good. "Alright, if you're sure."
He handed her what was left of his cotton candy and stepped up to the booth. The two students manning it greeted him brightly, but shrank back a bit from his intimidating look. He was already prepared to win, picking up the softballs they were using to knock down moving targets. Only to find that he missed the last throw. Frowning, he hissed under his breath, not willing to admit defeat, and held out his hand for more balls.
Taking his cotton candy, she watched intently, Kaidoh said he could win and she had faith in his abilities but An couldn't help but laugh lightly when he didn't. "Are you sure you don't want me to try?"
His burning need to keep doing it until he did succeed warred with his manners, biting back anything curt he might have said and handing her a ball.
An just smiled as she took the ball. Kaidoh really wanted that bandana and she was going to get it for him. Looking at the moving targets, she let them do a complete rotation before throwing the ball and hitting the target barley but enough to knock it over. She smiled big, happy that she had won, "See Kaoru-kun, told you I could do it."
"On the first try," he blinked at her, accepting the prize put in his hand. Closing his hand around the bandanna, a determined look settled over his face. "I'll win something for you," he declared, turning back to the game with a renewed sense of purpose.
"Guess I was lucky. It kinda looked like it wasn't going to fall." Either way she won him what he wanted to she was happy. Blinking up at him, she shook her head with a smile, "You don't have to really."
He was already throwing the balls, intently focused on the targets. One went down, then a second one. The third target snapped off completely from the force of his throw.
An watched with big eyes with every throw he made, same could be said about the students who were manning the booth. "Kaoru-kun, you don't have to-" She closed her mouth when he broke the target. "Throw so hard..." An gave the day class student a sympathetic smile as he handed her a stuffed bear. "Thanks for winning it for me."
Satisfied, he nodded at the students who stared at him and tucked his hands into his pockets. He watched her take the bear, cocked his head a little. "You like bears?"
Looking at the bear and then back to him, she shrugged, "I just thought it was cute." Most of the prizes didn't appeal to her but the bear was at least cute enough. " Let's go, before you break some more booths." She said sticking her tongue out at him. Kaidoh sure was interesting and kinda funny as well, she was sure they'd get along well.
