Authors comments: Go go Akutsu will power~
Sakuno nearly rushed out of the Dawn Dorm with a bag brimming with the strange herb. She had run into town the night before to pick up some ginseng and fell asleep before she could deliver it. Now she was making her way over to Akutsu as fast as she could hoping he was on patrol in the usual place. It was quite a bit later now than the last time, she hadn't been paying much attention to the clock; for all she knew she was breaking curfew. But it didn't matter, he had sounded so desperate for the herb that she didn't mind getting in trouble so long as it was delivered.
"Akutsu-san!" she called out as she reached the area, hoping to find him. She winced slightly as she came to a stop and finally caught her breath. Her ankle was a bit irritated from her running, she hoped that she hadn't reopened the wound yet. It didn't feel like it was bleeding again at the very least.
He was hanging out near the classroom buildings, chewing on one of Dan's cookies. It took the edge off his hunger, but not the nicotine fits he kept having, and it was making him even more irritable than he normally was. His gold eyes locked on her when he heard his name, though, and he tried to keep a leash on his frayed temper.
"Braids."
"Ah, Akutsu-san." she sighed with relief, she didn't know what she would do if he hadn't been around. "I-I brought the ginseng for you." she said, holding out the bag. Inside were various forms of the herb from cut up tiny pieces that were easy to digest, tea that would be ready if water was added, and some smaller cut raw roots.
"Fuck, Braids...really went all out. How the hell much did all this shit cost?" He frowned as he looked down into the bag. Still, he crammed the rest of the cookie into his mouth, dipping his hand in to grab a slice of the root and popped it into his mouth too.
"Oh, n-not very much... I got to know the store manager a few weeks ago when I came for garden supplies and they gave me a good deal." she explained as she watched him take some of the root already. They also helped her out a lot after she tripped and got that strange cut. She was glad they worked with herbs too, it was a very convenient accident if any. "I-I hope that's alright..?" Of course she was referring to how the root tasted and not the amount of money he owed her, because she didn't want anything in return.
He grunted, chewing it. The earthy, raw root taste mingled with the remnants of the cookie. It was a weird combination, but it seemed to work for him. He nodded, pulling out another slice and shoving it into his mouth as he took the bag from her. "How much?"
"N-Nothing! It's fine, Akutsu-san. So long as it helps." Sakuno smiled a bit sheepishly. She did it because she had worried, there was no need to him to reimburse her.
"Said I'd pay for it, Braids."
"B-But there's no need to, really." she tried to insisted.
He eyed her. "You rich or something, Braids?"
"No, not particularly."
"What I thought." Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out a battered leather wallet and flipped through some yen. "Thousand?"
She shook her head, more to explain that she didn't need it not that it wasn't a thousand yen. Sakuno had little confidence she could win an argument against him but she would persist for as long as she could. There was something to be said about her determination; not that she was very strong willed.
He shrugged. "Two, then." The vampire pulled out a wad of yen, shoving it into her hand.
"N-No!" she protested, trying to shove the money back into his hands. "It's fine, really!"
"I don't need charity," he frowned. "Just take it."
"B-But it's not charity." she frowned as well. "I did it because I was worried, so think of it as a gift." Sakuno tried to reason as she persisted in trying to give the money back.
"Don't need to worry about me. Just take the money," he argued back, pushing her hand away.
"I-I am worried though, so no... I can't take this." she said again, continuing to try and fight him pushing her hand back. (Not that she stood a chance of winning.) She knew there was nothing else she could really argue back with.
"Goddammit Braids," he barked, scowling now. "I said take the fucking money!"
Sakuno cringed slightly when he raised his voice. She had seen him angry before and this wasn't quite it but it still startled her. Still, she didn't want his money...
"N-No, I-I said I c-can't take it!" she attempted to shout back but it was only a weak return as her voice hardly raised. It wasn't like she was angry, after all, she just felt bad taking money for something like that.
"Look, use it on your plants, or your hair or something. Whatever. Just take it," he grumbled, his ears starting to turn pink when he heard other students start to whisper to each other around them.
"B-But it's your money, I don't want to use it on something for me... I said I got a discount, so it's fine really." Not that that made much better of an argument. She didn't really know why she was continuing to be so persistent about it. Perhaps it was because it was a matter of money she was being sensitive about it.
His jaw tightened, not used to being fought like this. It wasn't like he could do much to intimidate her into it but glare. Finally, he thrust the bag back at her instead. "Can't take this then."
"Ah--!" She grabbed hold of the bag afraid it might fall and panicked, stepping back on her injured ankle a bit. It stung a bit but she ignored it and turned her attention back to the boy in front of her. Sakuno hadn't expected him to turn around and do that; there was no way she could argue now.
"O-...Okay..." she sighed. "I understand..." She slightly shoved the bag back to him and opened her hand for his money begrudgingly. There wasn't much else she could do if he tried to turn down the ginseng like that, the whole point was for her to get it to him. She just wasn't used to putting up a fight for a gift.
He dropped the money into her hand, his nostrils flaring slightly when he smelled something. "You hurt?"
Subconsciously her hand moved to her right leg where the scratch was on her ankle. It was hidden beneath her uniform socks so she imagined he wouldn't have been able to notice. "N-No..." she tried to lie, though it was clearly written all over her face she was hurt. She could still feel it stinging, she wondered if she had opened it up again on accident.
Yeah he was smelling her blood all right. "The hell? You get cut or something?" He didn't see anything on her, but he could smell it all right. "Taking you to the nurse."
"I-It's fine! I just tripped in town and scraped my ankle is all." she explained, trying not to make a big deal out of it. There was no need for her to see the nurse, the store manager had already taken good care of it she just hadn't properly bandaged it that day.
"Yeah. And you're bleeding," he scowled, hoisting her up by the waist and carrying her towards the nurses office. Like Rin before her, he wasn't about to leave her walking around bleeding around a school full of vampires. He was suddenly glad he'd stuffed himself with Dan's cookies beforehand.
"K-Kya, A-Akutsu-san!" she cried when she felt herself hoisted up. "I-I said I was fine, really." She was horribly flustered and decided against squirming for fear of being dropped.
"Ya don't bleed on my watch, Braids," he said through gritted teeth, glaring down anyone in his way.
"B-But--..!" She didn't see how a little bleeding from such a small cut would affect other than herself. Furthermore, how had he known she was bleeding in the first place? Sure she hadn't bandaged it up properly but there was no way it would bleed through her socks. Perhaps he had very acute senses..? But even that seemed a bit odd. Oh well, she couldn't very well ask him or tell him otherwise now. Sakuno obediently stopped protesting and let herself be carried off to the nurse's office.
Once more, Akutsu kicked open the door to the nurses office, dropping Sakuno back onto her feet. Right before he picked her up again and setting her on the examination table, as he had An before her. Otherwise, he didn't touch her, didn't trust himself to look at her wound. "...."
Sakuno blinked a few times before getting a grip back on reality as she felt the table beneath her. All the carrying and setting down and lifting up again was a bit dizzying but she finally got a hold of herself again. She didn't imagine the boy would want to clear out her wound and she assumed the nurse was out at this hour since there was no one around.
"Ano... if you could please get me the peroxide, some cotton balls and some bandages that would be lovely..?" she asked, assuming the boy wouldn't want her to get back up since had gone through the trouble of sitting her down.
"What for? Just wait for the nurse, that's what she's for," Akutsu frowned.
"B-But I don't want to trouble anyone else... I can do it myself." Sakuno protested again, "I-I don't think the nurse is around at this hour either so... it'll just be faster if I do it." That and she could feel the wound stinging her slightly more even though she had put the pressure off of it. She really needed to clean it out now.
"...." He didn't have anything to say to that logic, and figured if he left her alone she'd either put herself out or one of the other vampires would smell her out. Scowling, he stalked to the cabinets, looking for all the stuff she'd wanted.
Sakuno waited patiently, fidgeting every now and then when her mind wandered back to the scrape. "S-Sorry, Akutsu-san..." she couldn't help but apologize. She had just wanted to help him but now she was under his care and had even argued with him a few times already.
That made him scowl even more when he couldn't find the peroxide. "Don't be sorry, dammit. Just be more careful."
She decided to be quiet for the rest of the time until he found the remainder of what she had asked. Sakuno had a feeling she was just being a nuisance otherwise, not that she wasn't being one already.
Finally, after uttering a string of vicious curses under his breath, he found what he was looking for and tossed it all next to her. Then he turned his back, not about to watch her expose her bleeding ankle.
The young girl wasn't surprised when Akutsu turned his back to her, she didn't know many people who enjoyed watching something like clearing a wound. Not that she would call it a wound, it was just an accidental scrape after all. Or so she had thought...
"Ah--!" she gasped. After taking of her shoe, rolling down her sock and undoing the not so well done bandaging she was a bit shocked to see the scrape wasn't as tiny as she had thought. There was a rather large smear of red covering her entire ankle. She swallowed roughly and got to work cleaning up the bloody mess around her cut, perhaps it was just because the blood had smeared that it looked so ominous. But she was sorely mistaken when she had finished clearly out the red and was left staring at a not so small scrape but a full claw mark on her ankle.
"Th-...That's funny, I didn't remember it looking like this..." she spoke idly trying to not be too freaked out. It wasn't exactly reassuring thinking you were hurt one way and finding out it was a bit more serious than you expected.
He didn't want to look, but he couldn't help glancing over when she said that. Gritting his teeth at the sight of the blood, he managed to look past it and had to turn around to get a better look. "The fuck...what is that? I thought you said you just scraped it!" The fuck that was a simple scrape.
"I-...I thought it was too. Guess I didn't notice, heh~" she tried to laugh it off lightly. At least it wasn't hurting as much anymore while she cleaned it up. She leaned over and threw away the cotton balls she had used already and cleaned out the wound again. Though it wasn't hurting as much it was still quite tender, and bleeding a little bit. But now the girl had a clear picture of the amount of damage; there was no way she could write it off as just a scrape from tripping. But what could have caused it..?
"I was just in town the other day getting the ginseng and then I fell and hurt my ankle..." she thought aloud, trying to retrace her steps in her mind and figure out what had happened.
Akutsu's jaw tightened. It looked like she'd gotten mauled....by something she wouldn't detect. He smelled vampire all over this. "Doesn't look like you're gonna need stitches," he said, growling in the back of his throat. "Be more careful! Don't go to town alone," he barked, grabbing some of the bandaging to hand to her.
Stitches..? Was it that serious? She had never been hurt more than this in her entire life so she wasn't exactly sure. All she knew was that the pain and size of the wound didn't seem life threatening so long as she took proper care of it. Perhaps she'd come back later when the nurse was in just to be safe.
"S-Sorry!" she nearly jumped when he handed her the bandaging. Sakuno quickly went to work dressing the wound for fear of pestering Akutsu longer. No doubt he was already fed up with her.
Once it was bandaged and out of his sight, Akutsu was able to relax a little. He could still smell the blood, but he could ignore it now. He put a hand on the top of her head. "Don't apologize," he muttered. "Just watch yourself."
"I-I will..." she nodded underneath the hand placed on her head. She could tell he had been worried and felt bad she had caused him to in the first place. No doubt it would be the same if anyone else knew; she would definitely be more careful from now on.
"Thank you, Akutsu-san." she smiled lightly up at him. Funny how whenever she tried to help out others seemed to turn around and help her instead.
Uncomfortable with the thanks, he shrugged and backed off. "...You okay on your own now?"
"I think so..." After she had put her sock and shoe back on she slipped off the table and tried to stand. Of course her foot had managed to fall asleep with all the blood and stillness but she caught herself before stumbling and balanced again. "Y-Yeah, I should be fine." she forced a reassured smile. So long as she took it easy getting back to the dorm she'd be alright, there was no need for her to take Akutsu away from his job further.
He frowned watching her. "I'll take you back to the dorm," he decided, pulling her arm over his shoulders to assist her.
"Th-Thank you..." It was a bit awkward at first but she was grateful for the help. Then again she had only gone out with the intention of getting the ginseng for him. She never would have thought it would become such a laboring thing, it was almost laughable. She couldn't help but smile, "I hope the ginseng helps." She wouldn't mind going through it all again if she had to, but she would definitely not be going into town alone. Sakuno would be getting her wound checked out tomorrow as soon as the nurse was in, that was for sure.
