Top Five Meme: Part One

Aug 17, 2009 18:45

It's taken me way too long to do this, and this is only the first part. But at least (this part) is done now, and I can post. :)

Anyway. The Gwen to my Ianto, lucy_locket asked me in reply to this meme, for my Top Five Gwen/Ianto Moments. I cheated, and made a Top Ten. I doubt anyone will mind.

Top Ten Gwen/Ianto Moments
(in chronological order)

Ianto Lets Gwen Into Torchwood: Everything Changes

Gwen: Oh, hiya. Sorry I'm late. Someone ordered pizza.
Ianto: Who's it for?
Gwen: I think it's a ... Mr. Harkness.
Ianto: Well, don't keep him waiting.

This moment is really significant for a lot of reasons. Ianto is, basically, the face of Torchwood, and therefore he's the first person that Gwen meets besides Jack. He's literally the one that lets her in. Also, and here's where I'm sure I'm going to lose people, but the fact that they're both Welsh probably put Gwen a little bit at ease. Someone safe and familiar in what's about to be Alice Going Down The Rabbit Hole. There's a bit of a connection there.

Gwen Sides With Ianto: Cyberwoman

Ianto: You could have saved her!

I love this. There's actually several moments in "Cyberwoman" where Gwen sides more with Ianto than she does Jack. I don't know if it's because Gwen's still kind of a newbie and doesn't grasp the real, absolute danger that would be the Cybermen race coming back, or maybe she just feels for Ianto. He's in love, and therefore in complete and utter denial, and Gwen gets that more than she does executing your coworkers. And here, even though Ianto's the one who punches Jack, Gwen goes to Ianto while everyone else goes to Jack. She tries to soothe him, and then later protect him from Jack (twice). Not to mention it's really fucking hot how close she is to him.

Gwen Catches Ianto: Countrycide

I think this one's simple enough to explain, heh. They all just watched Ianto nearly be killed before Jack shows up almost seconds too late. All attention is diverted to Jack on a fucking tractor, and Ianto collapses in relief, grief, and probably a lack of will to hold himself up. He's beaten and bruised and was seconds away from dying. Gwen, who's also injured, catches him as he falls back and just holds on, because they both need it. It's a really nice moment in such a dark episode.

Sushi?: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Gwen: Um, can you deal with the body when it's cold?
Ianto: My pleasure ... unless you mean making sushi.
Gwen: No, the morgue'll do fine. Thank you.

I love the ease between them here. This little tiny moment shows more than any other scene how close the team have gotten in Jack's absence. The team might have been a little fail back at the house with the Blowfish, but here, here they work like clockwork. It's easy and safe and they're the experts once again, instead of the ones losing innocent lives. The danger is over, we've won, let's get back to being an episode of The Office. They don't need Jack for that part.

Chivalry Is Not Dead: Sleeper

More sweetness, really. Gwen's upset that they couldn't save Beth, that they failed her, and Ianto of all people would get that. So he lends some quiet support. It's nice.

Bloody Cheer Up: To The Last Man

Gwen: He's a bit of all right.
Ianto: He's the boss.
Gwen: Nothing changes.

Gwen and Ianto discussing the Torchwood Mortality Rate. I love it because they're being almost sneaky in Jack's office. It's a mix of sadness and playfulness, the topic at hand obviously depressing the hell out of Ianto, and yet they're smiling and giggling, nearly gossiping over Torchwood Teams of Yore. And, when Gwen decides to go and take a look around the hospital, and she tells Ianto to cheer up, I think it was lucy_locket who said that might've been the moment Ianto decided to start things back up with Jack. Obviously, life is too short, and even more so in Torchwood. Don't spend it moping.

Gossip Queens: Adam

Gwen: He's like a little puppy, bringing her sticks. When's he gonna realize he's got no chance?
Ianto: Love's blind, apparently. He's idolized her for years now.

What did I just say about Gwen & Ianto gossiping? Oh yes. And here it's about their coworkers, who are not five feet from them. Yes, by this point Adam has already messed with both of their heads. But he hasn't changed their personalities (he didn't really change Owen and Tosh's either - those personalities were always in there, he just changed the memories that would have affected that) - Ianto and Gwen are the same, pretty much. I feel like this is a regular occurrence between the two. Just sit and talk because god knows they need to get it out somehow.

Mr. and Mrs. Ambassador of Wales: Lost Souls

Ianto: Darling, shall we go in?
Gwen: Darling, it would be a pleasure.

LOL SEE WHAT I DID THERE? Ahem. I cheated, obviously, because there's no screencaps for a radio play, but I figured, "Oh, ha. Gwen and Ianto pretend to be married. Let's use Gwen in a wedding dress." I am full of cheese, I know this. But I love this bit so much. They get to be silly, they get to pretend to be something they're not for two seconds. And they play it up, knowingly overplay it, really. Mostly to make Martha laugh and Jack groan until the cows come home. I'm amused Jack doesn't like the situation more - he gets to be personal assistant to "Mr. and Mrs. Jones". Come on Jack, where's your dirty mind gone? We know you and Ianto role play. :p

Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones: Defenders of Earth: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End

Gwen: Oh, yeah? Well I'm going out fighting. Like Owen, like Tosh.
Ianto: Yes ma'am.

Uhn, yesyesyes. Ianto & Gwen, abandoned by Jack again, and they're still badass. They're still going to Shoot at a Dalek even though it will Kill them, because they are Awesome. Gwen screams like a banshee, and Ianto gives the Dalek stink eye. Because you know, that will work. They've put their trust in Jack, that he and the Doctor will fix this, so all they have left to do is stand their ground and not give in. And then when they discover Tosh's Time Warp, they just sit back. End of the stinkin' world, have one on me. I'd love to know what they did while waiting.

Ianto and Gwen On The Phone: Children of Earth: Day Two

Gwen: Er, where shall we meet, Ianto?
Ianto: Your phone, your phone could be bugged.
Gwen: Erm, right... Er... Remember the last time we had ice cream together?
Ianto: No.
Gwen: Yeah, you do. After the Grand Slam.

There's so much to love about this little scene. Ianto obviously knowing Gwen's home number by heart. His trust that she got out safe and immediately went home (I highly doubt he was trying to call Rhys). Gwen & Ianto's desperate fumblings as they try to figure out What The Hell To Do. The allusion to past cute shenanigans (seriously, the ice cream. uhn.) And the idea that when everything's going to shit, they've still got each other. And they'll find each other eventually.

There's a ton of other moments that I love and didn't include, either I didn't have room for them or they're harder to explain. Besides, I cheated enough as it was. I'll include more in the massive Gwen/Ianto picspam I'm still working on.

I was also asked, again by lucy_locket, for my "top five scenes Ianto and Gwen don't interact in but look really fucking hot anyway." So, without further ado.

Top Five Gwen & Ianto Lookin' Damn Fine
(in chronological order)

Day One

This might be cheating, because they are talking, sort of. Team lunch and chat, though Ianto's hardly involved.

They Keep Killing Suzie

This whole little scene, when Gwen's trying to revive Suzie, and Ianto's in the background, and you've got Jack there too, it's all very Jack/Gwen/Ianto threesome-y. Uhn.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Badass. Suspicious and jealous. And just really fucking hot. Yes please.

Adam

I love that it's Ianto who brings Gwen back to her flat, because she obviously trusts him. And that, as he and Jack are about to leave, he gives Gwen a thumbs up. He is obviously five.

Fragments

This may be one of my favourite caps ever. This is really more a Jack & Ianto moment, with Ianto leaning into Jack and Jack being the one to set his shoulder. Gwen's just there for support, really. But she's there, and that's what counts. Also, a few frames back, her lips brush against his (good) shoulder. Cue my slight incoherence.
