Title: The Only Sound
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairing: Jack, Ianto, Gwen. Implied Jack/Ianto
Spoilers: None. It's post Exit Wounds, but there's no spoilers for anything.
Disclaimer: Don't own anything. Seriously.
Note: Just a random scene I came up with a few days ago. I dunno exactly how I feel about it but the scene wouldn't leave my head, so. Thanks to judexseven for putting up with the silence in Starbucks while I wrote it, haha (and looking it over).
Summary: Torchwood is full of painful decisions. And running.

The Only Sound

Gwen’s heart was pounding harder than she had ever felt before, her breath rushing in and out of her lungs so loud she could barely hear anything else. They were running. And if they were to stop if even just for a second… Gwen didn’t want to think about what would happen. Everything had gotten so out of control so quickly and instead of standing and fighting, protecting Earth, they were running for their lives just like anyone else.

She squeezed Jack’s hand a little bit tighter. They didn’t normally hold hands when they ran - they were always armed and chasing someone. But now they were being chased. Jack looked over to her quickly, giving her a reassuring smile.

Just as she looked ahead of her again, Gwen felt Jack tug on her hand hard enough to pull her back. For a split second she thought maybe Jack saw something she didn’t and he was pulling her out of the way. When she turned, however, she realized just how wrong she was. Jack had let go of her hand and was lying down on the ground. “Jack!” she screamed, immediately falling to her knees beside him. She could hear Ianto to her left stop and wait as she reached out to feel for his pulse, though she already knew the answer before she even checked.

“I didn’t realize they were so close,” Gwen said quietly.

“Gwen, we have to go. We don’t have time.”

She stared up at Ianto, angry and shocked. “We can’t just leave him!” She watched as Ianto bit his lip, a sadness in his eyes.

“I know. But we don’t have a choice. And you know Jack will be fine.” His voice was quiet but firm, commanding.

“But.. you..” she started. If possible, Ianto looked sadder.

“I know,” he repeated, his voice deep and thick with emotion. The tone of his voice broke her heart, but she understood what he was trying to say. “Gwen, please,” he pleaded, holding out his hand to her.

She took one last quick glance at Jack, kissing his temple before she turned and got up. Taking Ianto’s hand she squeezed it tightly, and they started to run.
