I remember when my buddy
kira_ first told me about his girlfriend. It went something like this:
Him - "Oh, did I tell you I moved in with my girlfriend?"
Me - "Um... no. Yeah, you kinda never even told me you had a girlfriend."
Him - "I haven't?"
Me - "Nope."
Him - "Oh. Well, I have a girlfriend."
Me - "So I've heard."
Him - "And she lives in Oregon, so now I'm..."
Me - "Wait, what?"
And the rest, as they say, is history.
That was, like, forever ago. Last night, I finally got around to adding her to my LJ Friend List, so hello to
lacus! From her, I snagged this:
Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.
From my list of interests,
lacus chose the following:
(Totally going to copy her and add wiki links for each, since it makes so much sense.)
1. Beat Takeshi
wikiThis is one crazy-prolific dude. He's done of ton of stuff in Japanese entertainment, including writing, directing, producing and acting/starring in movies, and has done a lot in television and even video games. I first heard about him when I caught a movie on HBO called "Brother." It's about this high-ranking Yakuza (think Japanese mafia) who's forced to run and hide in the U.S. At first, he alone in a foreign country, but he works out a whole new gang around him and builds up its power until the local Mafia family feels their power is threatened. It's a great movie, with a lot of humor, if macabre, spread throughout. Besides "Brother," he's also the creator of "Takeshi's Castle," better know here as "Most Extreme Elimination" as seen on the Spike channel. Plus, he also wrote, directed and starred in a revival of the long-standing movie series "Zatoichi." When directing, he's usually credited by his real name, Takeshi Kitano. Speaking of "Zatoichi," I'm going to jump ahead and address...
7. Zatoichi
wiki and
remakeZatoichi is the name of a fictional blind swordsman. He goes around as a blind masseuse with drinking and gambling as strong vices. That's just his day job, however. Whenever he comes across those in need, he's always there to lend a hand. No eyes, though - he's blind, remember? Oh, and by helping those in need, it's usually in the form of putting on the beat down on ruffians, yakuza, and general trouble makers. Zatoichi movies have been made forever, and Beat Takeshi had an interesting, if lame CGI, take on the character. Plus there was the Japanese version of Stomp, so that was different.
2. Bionic Six
wikiNo, it's not an '80s glam band... but almost! One of my favorite cartoon series from the late '80s, it blended action with sci-fi and pseudo-science. Not many of my friends remember this one, and I never had any of the toys - in fact, I don't recall ever seeing any in any toy store - but it was one of the the shows that I had to catch when I got home from preschool. Plus, it's got a pretty kick ass intro song, better than any of the other ones in my playlist from cartoons.
3. Dredg
wikiTo be honest, I don't know a whole lot about Dredg, other than the fact that I like their music. There are some people who have to know all the band members birthdates, what foods they're allergic to, and which sock they put on first. Well, that's not me. They're an alternative rock group, and according to the wiki, they formed really close to where I live. That's about it. Oh, and their album "Catch Without Arms" rocks.
4. Live 105
website and
wikiActually, I first heard Dredg on Live 105. It's my default radio station of interest. If I'm not listening to KITS 105.3 FM, then I'm listening to a Giants game on KNBR, oldies rock on KFRC, or whatever CD I happen to have lying around. I think I've brought it up in discussion with
kira_ a few times. They play mostly Alternative Rock, with some hip hop and pop music tossed in, and a lot of indie and underground music at night and weekends. Their current morning show, The Woody Show (formerly The Morning Music Co-Op with Woody, Tony and Ravy), is entertaining, and although I don't listen to it myself, they also broadcast Loveline at night. They actually pull a lot of weight in the rock music industry locally, which I think is pretty cool. You might have even seen some of their videos on YouTube or something. For those from So-Cal, think KROQ, only, well, better.
5. Mitsuya Cider
wikiOkay, I've been writing way too much for these things. I'll try to keep the rest short. Mitsuya Cider is my favorite Japanese drink, pretty much. It tastes like Sprite, only not as syrup-heavy, a bit more crisp. Very refreshing, especially when served ice-cold, but I'm sure there must still be a ton of sugar in it, since I can only drink one (well, one bottle) before my throat starts feeling weird.
6. Ozomatli
wikiOzomatli has a really interesting sound, fusing music from all over the world. Primarily, they have a lot of Latin sounds, many of their songs actually in Spanish, with hip hop and rock elements mixed in. They've even got a percussionist from Japan, so that's pretty cool. Definitely a festive and rocking sounds. Though Latin music isn't really my thing, Ozomatli has been a group that has piqued my interest.
7... Wait, look up, silly.
