Becker sighed as his mother yet again managed to steer the conversation around to her favourite topic at present. It was his brother’s fault: if Piers hadn’t proposed to his girlfriend…
“I worry about you, Hilary, dear.”
“I’m perfectly happy, mum.”
“You’re all on your own-”
“No, I’m not. I told you that I was seeing someone.”
As his mother talked, he glared at Matt, who was sitting beside him, listening with undisguised amusement.
“Alright, I’ll bring Matt to the engagement party so you can meet him.”
Matt’s grin faded. Becker smirked; it served Matt right for laughing at him.
