[Level - Public]
This weekend coming is Open Cambridge. Having
looked at the programme, there are a few things I’m tempted to try and go to (although I do have to spend some time at work over the weekend but it’s looking increasingly like that will be all day Sunday);
A Cambridge necropolis: the Ascension Burial Ground
All Souls Lane, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge CB3 0EA
Saturday 11am - 12noon
The Ascension Burial Ground is one of Cambridge’s best kept secrets. There’s more IQ in this acre than most others. Explore the history of the University amid the academics’ gravestones.
Crematorium and Cemetery
Cambridge Crematorium, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge CB3 0JJ
Saturday on the hour from 10am onwards, each tour 45 minutes, last tour 4pm
Tour of the Crematorium, Cemetery, grounds and chapels, with an explanation of the process in a working day
A walk round Mill Road Cemetery
Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 2AW
Friday and Saturday 11am - 11.40am and 2.30pm - 3.10pm
This short tour will outline the history of the Cemetery and its varied wildlife. Amongst its notable monuments are famous Cambridge names like Robert Sayle, Rattee and Kett.
Stourbridge Fair at the Leper Chapel
Barnwell Junction, Newmarket Road CB5 8JJ
Saturday 12noon - 4pm
Re-enactment of the famous Stourbridge Fair in the grounds of the Leper Chapel: a very special 12th century building cared for by Cambridge Past, Present and Future. Come and enjoy stalls and entertainment with a medieval flavour, storytelling and history talks. Come for the traditional opening or drop by through the afternoon. For more information see cambridgeppf.org/leper-chapel.thm or 01223 243 830 ext 202
Booking is on 01223 766 766 or cam.ac.uk/opencambridge.
Anyone up for joining in on any of the above, or indeed are you taking part in something you think I’d like? There’s so much on offer (far more than I’ve listed above), it’s hard to choose!
