I'm planning a four night trip to Vegas for late June. My buddy and I are going to play in a $2K buy-in NLH tourney (Event #48) starting on a Friday, we will arrive on Thursday. My wife will come along as well

The Rio is not particularly crazy for WSOP - the events are held way way way in the back and don't really interfere with the day to day activity of the Rio. Maybe it's a little more crowded, but I never felt overwhelmed and I don't particularly like large gatherings of people.
I'd suggest staying off strip and renting a house - you can find lots of good options at www.vrbo.com. Maybe you spend a bit on taxis or whatever, but your wife can live a normal life rather than being on the strip.
The Gold Coast is an older hotel, but the rooms are fine. I don't know how expensive/inexpensive suites are there. It is somewhat smoky (the ceilings are fairly low).
The Rio rooms are fine. Standard suites (aka a standard Rio room) is an ordinary hotel room with a "front" room added on. Some of the rooms are a long, long, long, long way from the playing site (the rooms at the Gold Coast are closer than those).
As long as your wife and friend stay in the front of the Rio (very easy to do) they won't find it to be anymore slammed than a strip casino. The WSOP is held in the back and even the taxis and valet go to a completely different entrance than the main casino entrance. It is quite reasonable to stay there aside from price (inflated during the WSOP

Gold Coast is right next to Rio. I've never stayed at Gold Coast though I knew a couple of people who stayed there because it was close to the Rio.
