In the decade I've been writing, I've only ever written and posted one WIP. And that was the second thing I ever wrote in Highlander fandom, 'Touch Not the Cat.'
After that harrowing experience, I swore I would present any story I posted totally complete. Why? Because I hate spending weeks, months, sometimes years following a story that suddenly gets dropped.
Oh, I understand why, I do. Sometimes the muse deserts. Or real life interrupts. Other times, it's as simple as the author losing interest. But it drives me crazy...
On the other hand, there are so many wonderful 'moments' I would have missed if I refused to read WIPs. 'The Seduction of the Desert Prince' is one of the finest examples of a WIP I still consider one of my favorite stories ever. Even though I have no reasonable expectation that I will ever see it completed.
Thus, the love/hate relationship.
And thus my failure to post my own stories. At this very moment I have four WIPs (actually started). Not to mention the ideas for a dozen more. And the only reason I haven't posted anything is because I can't guarantee I'll finish them. And that's because I get so wrapped up in the damn research. Seriously, I have pages and pages of stuff that I've spent hours looking for instead of just making it up as I go.
So, maybe it is time for me to let go of that old prejudice and let my fics fly free...
Maybe.
