Lana unlocked the front door, and stuck her head inside.

“Hello?” she called out, stepping through the doorway cautiously. Given her parents tendencies towards public displays of affection - and lots of them - one never quite knew what to expect when entering the house.

Relieved to not find them making out on the couch, she dropped her duffel bag and kicked off her shoes in the direction of the pile (mostly her mom’s) next to the door.

Still no answer. She frowned. When she’d planned this surprised trip home for her dad’s birthday, she hadn’t actually imagined him not being here.

But that was the problem with surprises.

With a sigh, she hung up her coat in the closet and then headed up the stairs to drop off her bags.

She grumbled as she climbed, cursing at herself again for over packing. Why she’d thought she needed all of this was currently escaping her, though she was certain she’d had a good reason at the time.

She pushed open the door to her bedroom and immediately dropped the bag to the floor. It was in her room. Her neat freak mother would just have to be okay with that. More carefully, she set her laptop bag down on her desk.

She eyed her bed longingly, the tiredness from late nights of studying to be able to make the trip nearly overwhelming her. She’d just about decided to crawl under the covers and take a nap, when her other pressing need decided to make an appearance.

Her stomach growled. Loudly.

She pressed a hand to her abdomen, and decided she’d sleep better on a full stomach anyway.

She traipsed back down the stairs and began rummaging through the refrigerator.

Spotting leftover chinese takeout containers, she grabbed them and kicked the refrigerator door closed. She set them on the counter, and opened a drawer to retrieve a set of chopsticks.

She was just popping open the lid when she heard the front door open and the sound of her mother’s voice.

“Wasn’t the door locked?” Robin worried.

Her father’s voice answered, “I’m sure it’s just that Laurie dropped Matt off from practice already and forgot to lock the door.” He paused. “Matt!”
Lana grinned and raced towards the living room. “Actually, that was me,” she said, skidding to a stop in front of her parents. “Hi.”

They blinked at her in surprise.

“Lana?!” Robin asked incredulously, tugging her into a hug. “What are you doing here?”

Lana laughed as Patrick pulled her out of Robin’s arms, drawing her in for his own hug. “Who cares,” he said into her hair.

Extracting herself, she explained, “Well, unless I misread the calendar, tomorrow is Dad’s birthday… so consider me an early birthday present?”

“Best present ever,” Patrick announced, pulling her back into his arms for another hug.

“I’m glad you think so,” Lana said, voice muffled by his shirt. “Dad, were you planning on letting me go so I can breathe?”

“What, like that’s necessary now?” Patrick scoffed, relenting and letting go. He narrowed his eyes as a thought occurred to him. “How did you get here?”

Lana rolled her eyes. “Chill, overprotective one. I took the train. Just like I have a million times before.”

“I don’t think I like you being an adult,” Patrick grumbled. He hooked an arm around Lana’s neck and ruffled her hair. “Couldn’t you go back to being a little girl?”

She shook her head. “Nope.”

Robin smiled at the sight of them. “So how long are you here for, sweetheart?”

“Just for today and tomorrow,” Lana answered. “My train leaves Sunday at eleven.”

“So soon?” Patrick pouted.

Lana shrugged. “Sorry. Unless you’d like me to fail out of Harvard my freshman year…”

“Would that mean you’d have to move back home and go to PCU?” he countered, with a grin.

“Mom!”

Robin raised an eyebrow at her husband. “Patrick.”

He released Lana and flopped down on the couch. “It was just an idea.”

“A completely ridiculous one,” Lana sniffed, seating herself on the arm of the couch.

“Well, this is your father we’re talking about,” Robin pointed out, coming to stand behind her husband, resting her hands on his shoulders.

He looked up at her. “Thanks a lot, wife.”

“You’re welcome, husband,” she returned, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

Lana shook her head. “You two will never change, will you?”

In unison, they answered, “Nope.”

She smiled. “Good.” She stood. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get something to eat and then I’m taking a nap. I’ll see you guys in a couple hours?”

Robin looked over at her daughter. “Did you want me to make you something to eat?”

“No, I saw the leftover chinese in the fridge. I’m good with that.”

“Okay. We’ll go out for dinner later. Anywhere you want to go?”

“Nope.” She started walking towards the kitchen, but paused at the door and turned her head around. “Just don’t let Matt pick, okay?”

Robin laughed. “It’s good to have you home, sweetie.”

“It’s very good to have you home,” Patrick echoed, smiling at his daughter. His far too grown up daughter. “I missed you.”

Lana smiled. “I missed you too.”

She disappeared into the kitchen.
