theechochorus “You know…” Maxie drawled, looking up at Lucky as they walked up the walk to the Scorpio’s front door. “Walking me to the door is awfully date like behavior, when I still don’t know if this was or wasn’t actually a date.”
Lucky looked down at Maxie, a teasing glint in his eyes. “But Maxie, I like to keep you guessing.” He bumped her with his hip, pushing her off balance.
She bumped him back, and dashed up the steps to the front door before he could regain his balance. She turned to face him, as he climbed the stairs behind her. “So…”
“So…” he echoed. He shoved his hands into his pockets and rocked back and forth on his heels. “I had a really good time tonight. I’m glad you ordered me to take you out.”
“It was not an order,” Maxie sniffed, fumbling through her purse for her keys. “It was a strongly worded suggestion.”
“Order.”
“Whatever.” Maxie turned to unlock the door, before turning back to Lucky. “We should do this again sometime.”
He nodded. “We should.”
The stood together in silence for a few moments, starring at each other through hooded eyes, before Maxie finally gave an internal sigh and ended it.
“Well, good night,” she said, stepping forward and stretching on her toes to press a kiss to his cheek. She fell back down, and turned to open the door. Her hand was turning the door knob, when Lucky’s hand fell on top of hers, stilling her movements.
From behind her, Lucky’s breath was hot on her neck as he whispered in her ear. “Maxie?”
“Yes?” Maxie tried to ignore the shiver that was running down her spine.
“I made up my mind.”
She tried to keep the interest out of her voice. “Mhm?”
“It was definitely a date.” He spun her around to face him, pushing her back into the front door. Maxie’s last conscious thought before he kissed her was wondering if the darkness she saw in his eyes was the hint of real desire that had never been there when he’d kissed her before.
But then she couldn’t think at all, and her whole world shrunk to what she was feeling. The pressure of his lips on hers, the tightness with which his hands tugged her into his body, the sensation of his tongue dueling for dominance with hers. Her hands wound into his hair, and she tugged on his head, pulling him closer. She heard a moan, dimly, but couldn’t tell if it had come from him or her.
Maxie tore her lips away, panting lightly. Lucky shifted his focus to her neck, trailing kisses down her throat, as Maxie fumbled with the door knob behind her, trying to get it open. As Lucky hit a particularly sensitive spot, she frantically twisted the door knob one more and it fell open, sending Lucky and Maxie stumbling into the dark living room.
Maxie dropped her purse and immediately wrapped her arms around Lucky once more, tugging him backwards towards the couch. Her knees hit the edge and she fell backwards, pulling Lucky down on top of her.
He landed heavily on top of her, and he pulled back, looking down on her. Absently, he stroked the hair around her face, tucking it back behind her ears.
Maxie tried to tug his lips back down to hers, but he stayed where he was, just looking at her intently. “Lucky?”
He ran his fingers down her neck gently, and she shuddered. “What are we doing?” he asked curiously, as he continued to lightly touch her.
“What?” Maxie gasped out, as his hands grazed up her body, with a touch light as a feather.
“What are we doing?” He repeated, cupping her chin and forcing her to look at him directly. “What is this, Maxie?”
She arched her back and rubbed her body along his. “I would think that would be obvious.”
He groaned a little and dropped his hands to her hips to hold her in place. “I’m serious.”
She peered up at him. “You are, aren’t you?”
He nodded, waiting expectantly for an answer.
“I don’t know,” Maxie said slowly. “What do you think it is?”
“I think it would be really easy for us to fall in bed together.”
“So let’s do that,” Maxie said, reaching up to try to tug him down once more.
“But I think it would be too easy.”
Maxie froze. “What?”
“It would be too easy,” Lucky repeated. “Don’t you think?”
“I can’t think at all like this,” she huffed, pushing Lucky backwards. “Get off me, if you want to actually have a conversation.”
He laughed and sat up on the other end of the couch, and helped to tug Maxie into a sitting position.
Maxie tried to push her hair back to normal, but gave up and looked over at Lucky with exasperation. “I don’t understand what you’re trying to tell me Lucky. You want to actually date me? You want to have a real relationship? You don’t want to have sex with me? What?”
Lucky frowned. “You think I don’t want to have sex with you?”
“Well the thought had occurred to me,” Maxie said, averting her eyes from his. That was a partial truth, really. The thought had occurred to her that he didn’t want to have sex with her sober, without the lure of drugs to keep him interested.
“You’re an idiot.”
Maxie’s head shot back to look at Lucky. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me. I kissed you, Maxie. So why in the world would assume I don’t want you?”
She folded her arms across her chest. “So are you going to tell me what you want?”
Amusement dancing through his eyes, Lucky conceded the point. “I think we should actually go out on a date that we both know is a date, and see what happens from there.”
“Fine.”
“Fine?” Lucky echoed. “That’s it?”
Maxie shrugged. “I agreed, what more do you want?”
“Enthusiasm might have been nice,” he muttered, as he stood. “I think I should go. This night has not gone like I thought it would.” He started walking towards the door, and Maxie rose to walk with him.
“I’d get used to that if I were you,” Maxie intoned from next to him, as she opened the door for him.
“To what?”
“Things not going like you think they will.” Maxie stretched up on her toes and pressed a kiss to Lucky’s cheek. “Good night!” She quickly shut the door in his face.
Lucky stared at the closed door with bemusement. Maxie was right, he thought to himself. He’d better get used to the unexpected.
He turned and headed down the walkway to his car, whistling softly under his breath.
It might be just what he needed.
