What is the purpose of war in human society? Is it simply instinct, nature’s way of weeding out the weak or unintelligent? Is it biologically programmed into humans? Or is it a choice we have made, a choice, though gruesome, that allows human kind to have a purpose, a way of living that gives structure to our lives. To answer this we have to revisit the ultimate question, why are we here? Is it some kind of intelligent design, a random event of science, an actual hand guiding our movements? Most humans, when asked about the concept of utopia are very enthusiastic in the beginning until someone takes the time to paint a picture of life in a utopia. A society where everyone gets along, where there is not war, no tragedy, no one kept down. Everyone gets an education, a decent job, a loving home. But here is where the system breaks down. No one wants to live in a society that allows no room for tangents, for people that find their own way. Because the way is already provided. How does war fit into all of this? Well, war creates a world of differences, a world in which those on the bottom have the hopes and goals of moving to the top. The middle has the opportunity to create support groups, rallies, aid foundations. To donate a dollar to supporting starving kids in Africa. Those small gestures give the middle class something to discuss in idle conversation and also something they can feel like they are making a difference in. all people like the feeling of bettering their environment, its programmed into us so that we survive. Then, the upper class can make large decisions and donate lots of money to help aid refugees, mothers, children, bleeding country men and all the while they get the high of generosity. Now, im all for a generous streak in society. But one wonders if chaos and violence is there just to be a cause for the feelings it creates within people. If there was no war or hunger or illiteracy, what would the funds go to? The arts? What would humans focus their attentions on, science? Would we all band together to discover what exactly is going on in this little world of ours. Maybe that’s just a little too close to home for those of the religious sect? I don’t know what would happen but I know there would be far fewer rioting college kids getting to feel “political” and “with-it”. People would lose that stimulation of protesting to make a difference in our world. The economy would become stagnant (yes, I know, I know its already been explained by george orwell). I think maybe being part of the middle and upper classes would lose some of its excitement and fulfillment. Someday ill put this into a clean, well thought out essay, but for now that’s just what I was thinking about while cooking pasta.
this is the essay im working on (no its not for school, just for pleasure of writing) and it needs work. please comment on it, poke holes in it, add your own thoughts, anything is appreciated.
