I've been ignoring LiveJournal in favor of cleaning, reading, and socializing, but now I'm at my new job and am not yet settled enough to have a lot to do, so it's time to catch up!
Housecleaning update: Those wall mark eraser foam things really, really work. Yay! We now have mostly clean walls. They seem to work on floors too, so I've started getting rid of nasty black marks. Very satisfying. We tidied the bedroom. It feels much nicer. The living room still has a long way to go.
Job update: I have a nice spacious cubicle, which I spent most of today tidying as the previous occupant had left all her files. I just got my computer. Tomorrow (hopefully) I will get voicemail access, a proper ID with my picture, and access to the servers that carry the data I'll be using. For now, I get to read the Stata user's manual and try to figure out how on earth I'm going to write a program that assigns weights to records automatically. Whee!!!
Official orientation is next Tuesday. My 2nd boss, whom I still haven't met, returns next week. The other RAs are very friendly, and everyone has lunch together every day in the uber-cheap yet decently tasty cafeteria. Life is good. Only I don't seem to be able to access Gmail.
Fun update: I just finished reading A Room of One's Own (Virginia Woolf). If you haven't read it, you should. Not because it's a Good Thing To Do, but because it manages to be utterly delightful while opening windows onto some very fascinating and promising ideas about feminism, most of which I'd never seen before. How can that be, when it's one of the most famous feminist works in existence???!!! The woman was truly a genious. I now, for the first time, have someone I can honestly answer when asked what person in history I would most like to meet. She'd just be so much fun to chat with!
Need to get back into playing the harp. Again.
Such pretty weather! We went to Stinson Beach yesterday. Found a lovely art gallery and wandered about on the beach. Yay for California.
Tim went over Bret's astrological chart with him. I'm still not sure what I think about astrology, but the way Tim uses it seems to make more sense than all of me is entirely comfortable with. Much of me is quite happy with it, which I think is the problem for the other bit. This was preceded by a very good metaphysical conversation with Peter and Jette. Always nice to talk with people who actually consider an issue instead of just spouting the latest nonsense. I think I'd call myself religious with a bit of mysticism rather than new-agey, which is why I have trouble with the astrology. It's distinctly new-agey.
