Dave Trampier and Dave Sutherland III, who are out of the business and dead, respectively must be named first, for laying the groundwork for the game's art direction. Trampier is just a fantastic artist. Wormy was hard to read in bits, but read as a whole on my Dragon Magazine Archive, it was a revelation. Sutherland's art was much sketchier, but it was fascinating to look at. There was so much life to it. It looked like he was one of those court artists, except he was sitting in at someone's game. ;)
Jim Holloway. His work in the Endless Quest books really helped rope me into the game. I had a crush on the pixie in Revolt of the Dwarves! He set the appearance for humanoids in 2nd Edition, with the first (and part of the second) Monstrous Compendium.
Larry Elmore. Yeah, he mostly draws look-alike pinups these days, but his early work was varied. He draws great old wizards too! ;) His comic Snarfquest was hilarious too.
Robin Wood. Naturalistic and charming work that's fun to look at.
Denis Beaviaus (whose name I couldn't spell properly at gunpoint) painted some outstanding Dragon covers!
And of course there's Tom Wham with his silly art and board games!
Er, I suppose I shouldn't overlook Phil Foglio, either!
