I recently took a picture from the bridge going into Longboat Key from the Coquina Beach area. Laurie was driving and there was nobody behind us so she stopped at the highest part of the bridge. If I raised up off my seat and leaned out the window a bit, I had a perfect view of the sandy hook at the southwest end of Greer Island (aka Beer Can Island by the locals).
When the light and atmosphere are just right, the waters here are the most gorgeous shades of turquoise and aqua, so mesmerizing and beautiful that it is hard to look away. When you do turn your eyes to something else, it seems harsh compared to the soothing hues of the water. Anyway, I got off a few shots before traffic picked up again, and we were on our way east going through Longboat Key and past Whitney Beach, to our final destination St. Armand’s Key.
Now comes the sad and happy part . . .
I posted the picture on my facebook and soon two people wanted to know if I was going to get it printed and if so, they would like to order. One said her son, who passed away a year ago, loved to swim on Beer Can Island and would spend many hours there every week. The other told me her brother (who was her best friend) drown at Whitney Beach in May. He loved to swim and loved that beach more than any other. He was a strong swimmer she said, but got caught in the undertow. I remember reading about that drowning in the paper.
I thought to myself, how very sad and why would they want a reminder. But they said seeing the beach where their son and brother spent time and loved so much brought them happiness and peace. They both said they could visualize them there and they wanted that reminder.
I am also going to display it at the gallery and it just may touch someone else.
