bike ride . . .

(I usually don’t make two posts in a day, but I did today, so don’t miss the other one.)

I woke up really feeling like a bike ride this morning and decided to just take off from the house. I’ve been wanting to try the ride down to Robinson and not load my bike on the rack and thought this morning would be the day.

Mary Lou & Pete have been telling me for a while now I should be doing this instead of loading my bike on the car rack and driving somewhere, so I tried it this morning. It was an easy ride, about five miles round trip. No problems, no strain, it was really pleasant-and sidewalks all the way. I hate riding in the road.

On the way back I could hear a hawk with its loud piercing call long before I ever saw it. I was almost home and ready to turn down my street when I spotted him high up in a towering Norfolk Island Pine tree on the next street over. I had only taken Little Red with me and I knew I was too far away to get a decent picture, so I rode on home and grabbed my camera with the 500mm lens and started walking. I didn’t hear him any more and thought, “darn, he’s probably flown away.” I knew about where the pine tree was and started heading in that direction. I kept looking up through thick barriers of oak trees in people’s yards, moving around until I saw an opening and could finally see the top of the tall pine. There it was - still there!

While I was shooting, a man came out of his house and asked me how in the world I could take a picture with that lens and not have a tripod. I told him I rarely ever use a tripod, but probably could take better pictures if I did, but since I take my photos mostly “on the fly,” so to speak, a tripod would not work for me.

My favorite lens is the 18-200mm and I have it on my new camera body, but for long shots I like to use the 150-500mm. I don’t think I’ve ever shown the two lenses here before.
