And the cold continues . . .

Another cold day. I'm beginning to see the effects of it on some of the sealife already.

I went for a beach walk again yesterday morning. It was still very cold, but the wind was about half of what it was on Monday. The tide was out and I could not believe all the stuff that was visible to me. This is normally all underwater, but I was able to walk out about 100 feet or so.

My first few steps on the beach and the first thing I sighted . . . I thought it was weeds or seaweed sticking up out of the sand. . . but as I got closer, I could see it was the claws of a crab reaching out of its grave. It was a sad and eerie sight.

I found many live creatures, but they were in such a state of cold shock they were hardly moving. Some were buried in the sand with just a little bit sticking out. There was a dog digging up something ahead of me and when I got there I saw it was a giant lightning whelk. It was still alive and moving very slowly. It was the largest I’d ever seen - as long as my size 8 ½ shoe. I photographed it and then buried it back in the sand at the same level where I thought it was before. I found several more a little later that were just as big. When the tide comes back in, hopefully they will be alright. It is supposed to warm up this weekend into the 70s.

A very big clam . . . still alive, about the size of a canteloupe

This pole is usually underwater

FULL HOUSE . . .

This big Whelk had a little one attached to it. Both were alive.

Another live one.

A LITTLE RAY OF SUN . . .
