I was out in the front yard this afternoon and I could hear a familiar tap - tap - tap. I knew there was a woodpecker close by, and I usually always hear them before I can see them.
I searched and searched and finally I saw a little female Downy Woodpecker in one of the palm trees. She was moving and dancing all around the tree very fast.
After I took a couple of pictures, I noticed that when I heard the knocking sound, I could see she was not actually moving her head, so I knew there was another one, too. All of a sudden a little male came around the tree and I was able to get one picture of them together, then the male flew away, followed by the female a few seconds later.
The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest in Florida. The male has a small red patch on the back of its head, and the female does not. Otherwise, they are almost identical.
