It was just a silly little thing, a child’s play toy that could bring simple joy to an infant and here it was causing her to cry. The wood was cool and smooth under her fingers and each movement her fingers made caused it to make a soft tinkling noise that would make a child laugh happily and yet it made her cry all the more.
Today was Jackie’s due date; Rose’s little brother or sister was to be born today, if she gave birth on the correct day of course. Another little Tyler running around and as she sat there with the rattle in her hand unable to push away the sadness that consumed her. She was to be a big sister but to what, to who? Boy or girl, what would they be named, how would they grow without her to look up to. She knew Mickey and Jake would make sure they were safe but it wasn’t the same, she was the big sister, it was her job to look after them and tease them and do all those things a sister should do.
Drawing her knees up she buried her face in them, her shoulders shaking as she cried. One day, one moment she would give herself to mourn the sibling she had lost. A moment of weakness where she could just cry and get all the anguish out of her system.
She didn’t hear the soft knock at the door or see the worried look on his face as he entered her room, she didn’t feel him sit down next to her. It wasn’t until he pulled her to him that she realised he’d come into her room. Rose turned into his embrace, the Doctor, her Doctor, well hers and Martha’s now, but in her heart he was and would always be her own. Her Doctor, her love.
“Rose, what is it?” Pushing her hair back from her face he looked down at her worried, “Is everything alright, no stupid question, of course it’s not alright, you wouldn’t be crying if everything was alright now would you.” And as she cuddled to him even more he held her tightly, a frown on his face at the sound of the bell.
After a little while Rose looked up at him, her face streaked with tears, black smudges under her eyes from her make up. “I’d ‘ave been a good sister, I know it, I…”
His eyes softened as he looked down at her and he realised what was going through her mind, “The best,” he said softly, smiling at her. “No-one would have made a better sister than you Rose.” He’d lost his family himself, so long ago now and it still pained him, she’d lost hers so recently and she was finally letting it all out.
Smiling through her tear’s she nodded at him, a slight thank you, before curling back up but this time her head was resting in his lap, her eyes fixed on the toy in her hands. “You know, if it was a girl they were going to call her Emily Grace and if it was a boy John David, I like those names. Strong names.”
The Doctor nodded, watching her and trying to hide his worry. “Yes Rose they are, especially John, I rather like that one,” soft smile.
