So, I don't know whether it's the same in English, but in German we use "Timbuktu" as a synonym for "far away place". Thus, it occasionally comes up in a conversation. Well, yesterday I was discussing where to have lunch with some of my colleagues and since we couldn't decide, the suggestions got more and more abstruse until somehow said "We could just as well go to Timbuktu!".
To which I responded: "Oh, do you like the food in Mali then?" and then everybody just looked at me in amazement because I knew where Timbuktu actually was. I didn't tell them where my vast geographical knowledge came from... :-P
