Memories

When I arrived home from the Board meeting last night, I was a big ole grouch. Unfortunately, Eldred was the recipient of my bad mood. He is really trying to make inroads in the clutter department. I almost thwarted his attempts with my grumpiness. I did manage to perk up after spending about an hour online catching up on LJ. I am finally caught up. Yay!

After I got off the computer I went through the piles Eldred had so carefully sorted. I was able to dispense with almost everything. A small pile went into the box that is next on the sorting list. I even filed some of the items instead of leaving them for later. Baby steps...

Then I made the mistake of delving in the box. It was a mistake because it sucked up time that I should have spent sleeping. Nonetheless, it was fun because they were old school papers. They were from elementary school, high school, and college English. It was an enjoyable trip down memory lane looking at the titles. One of the elementary school papers was a description of the Carrousel Parade in Charlotte. Unfortunately, there is no date. Given that Miss America 1966 was in the parade, it was probably within a few years of that year.

Some of the high school papers show that my interest in the environment started early. There are papers on air pollution and herbicides. I was sort of bummed when I looked at one of the papers on 3 of ee cummings poems. I commented to Eldred that I couldn't write a paper like that now. I feel like I have gotten less smart as time has gone by. I have definitely lost the skill to write analytical papers. Eldred tried to reassure me by saying that in high school I was trained to write papers and had practice. That did help me feel somewhat better. Being an engineering major in college and then working as a programmer for 20 years probably had something to do with losting that skill. It's a different type of writing in those fields. I'm not sure it's really a skill that I need anymore. It was just shocking to look at it and be amazed that I wrote that.

I felt better after going through the stuff and promised Eldred I would try to go through more this weekend. I did put a few things in the box for the yard sale. I apologized profusely for my grouchiness. We both felt better after our foray into our old notes and papers. I probably need chocolate after next month's board meeting before facing any people. :-)
