Mow Down Pollution

Greenville County has an air quality program. I have one of the "Spare the Air" t-shirts that I got the Earth Day event at the library. The Upstate Forever newsletter had a blurb about a lawnmower exchange event next weekend. I emailed the contct person for a link or more info. If we had a larger yard, we would probably get an electric mower. However, as our yard is miniscule, we have a little push mower which works just dandy.

One of our neighbors actually uses a weed wacker on his yard. When the Navigator mused about employing one for our yard, I informed him that using a weed wacker near my flowers would result in me using the weed wacker to trim his hair. He got the message :-)

We/Alan uses a reel mower on our lawn, but we only have .22 acres, including the house, and the hill in back must be at least .02. It takes us about an hour to do the whole lawn, when you plan on cross cutting the grass, so two passes for every area. Alan's found that it works fine as long as you maintain a steady walking speed. I've also found that it doesn't stir up as much so bothers my allergies less.

Then again, we used an electric lawn mower growing up, but after I accidentally ran over the cord twice, it became my little sister's chore.

You might want to investigate either getting a new reel mower, or having the old one sharpened. They need to be sharpened about every two years. You also have to mow the grass before it gets TOO tall. Otherwise, I love our reel mower-- it's no more work than a power mower, and it ALWAYS STARTS. :) Also, you don't have to worry about flying stones, sticks, etc.
