Blacker than Dark

[ Video / Action ]

[ Anyone with clairvoyant or psychic powers who happens to wander into the area beside building six will notice their skills suddenly melt away. It was like walking into a dead zone where all perceptions were blocked entirely and everyone they met was completely, dark, unreadable. Stepping back out the way they had come, even a ( Read more... )

[ What a cute and somewhat familiar cat! But Tyr is staying inside today (in building ten) in case there's more going on than just the sky being dark.

More than that, though, Tyr know why Eagle recognises that place. Of all the places to remember... ]

...It'd probably be better for you to look around after this curse has passed... Looking at the City when it's dark like this isn't the same.

[Surely an adorable dog would remember a beautiful cat like this since he chased her around all day during that curse.
Tyr’s unspoken sympathy would be appreciated. ]

That’s true of course. It would look very different in the dark. [Wistful smile. ]

It is somewhat embarrassing to admit that was why I decided to take a look around now. At least if I didn’t recognize anything I could have blamed it on the darkness.

[And fine again. Just like flipping a switch. ]

I take it you have decided to stay inside today?

[ ...okay yes he totally recognises cat-Rita, but there are probably loads of similar cats out there!

Before his question, Tyr's expression had already slipped further into gloominess. His voice is quiet when he answers. ]

Might as well... The darkness probably means something is wrong.

Have you found any other place you remember?

It probably does. The sun hasn’t been up for two days and it isn’t stormy there must be some other reason for it to be so dark. Maybe magic?

[Hopefully a smile will help to lighten this dark mood of yours? Eagle tries for it anyway. ]

No, besides this place and the apartment. I am afraid every other place is completely new to me.

I'm sure it's a curse. It's just what it means that I'm not sure of.

[ Smiling doesn't work when Tyr knows something is wrong... ]

But you can just make new memories of the places you don't remember; that'd probably be better than remembering anyway...

Yes, a curse… It must be one of those.

[Said like one near totally unfamiliar with the concept. He had been warned they could be dangerous of course, but the variety and nature of a curse was all very new. Something to be investigated so more about it could be learned. ]

You said something like that once before. How would that be better? There are so many people who seem to know me but I can't remember any of them. Is it really better to forget friends?

If they're you're friends, it doesn't matter if you forget them. They'll remember you, and you can be friends again. Besides, it's easier to let go of the past when you can't remember it...

[ Thankfully, there's no mind reading, so Eagle doesn't have to know that Tyr would agree if not for the fact curses make friends hurt each other. Those are the sort of things that should be forgotten; they don't count. ]

You are probably right about friends. A true friend would put up with a situation like this but… I do still feel bad telling them about it. Not everyone saw Lantis’s message and a few people have been horribly surprised by my lack of remembering them.

[Too bad he can still remember one of those terrible curses. ]

I know I decided to do this and if my memory never returns I will learn to live with this, but I am not sure the past is something I really want to give up on entirely. Even if there are bad things that I can’t recall, there must also be good events too.

Don’t you feel the same way, Tyr?

...Yeah, I agree...

[ He smiles sadly at Eagle. It's almost pitying. ]

But... People come here and leave here, and sometimes they forget everything; those memories never return. They still do fine... So maybe it's best to think of it like that. That they're memories of a past self...

[Oh no, not pity. Eagle doesn’t want Tyr to feel bad about any of this. He would claim up and down that he was fine with the situation. ]

I think that is a very good way to look at this memory loss.

[Actually Tyr’s explanation of memories of a past self is a bit of comfort and the hidden power he was channeling weakens and fades away. ]

I will try to see it that way from now on.

[ If Tyr could tell, he'd be glad that Eagle really was relaxing. ]

Good. It'd be best for you... Even though some people remember in time...you can't force it, so don't worry about it too much.

Some people do remember? I hadn’t heard that before.

[He had but… yea. ]

Thank you Tyr. You were very helpful and kind. I can see why we were friends.
[ + 1 friendship point ]

I would like to call you one again.

[So he will. ]

We are friends, so you can call me that. [ He says it without much doubt. After all, this Eagle didn't deserve the same suspicion he garnered before. He seemed mostly harmless. ]

But yeah... Sometimes it can take a while, but people can remember slowly.
