A friend on FB asked what we all thought the purpose of education was. This was my answer:
* to prepare you to build your own life -- which will include getting and keeping a job, managing the details of adult life (like home repair, paperwork, food shopping), communicating with others, maintaining relationships (romantic, platonic, familial, business, etc.), having hobbies, having a sense of balance.
* to be an informed voter and an active and responsible member of society
* to be prepared to hold your own in the larger cultural conversation -- to get basic cultural references, be capable of examining and analyzing a position put forth in a discussion or in a paper/magazine/book, be capable of figuring out how/where to learn new things, and of making connections/comparisons between ideas or new information.
I thought I'd put it here, also, as a spot to come back to, to consider whether I'm providing the environment for Sarah to learn these things.
