I was in a car accident. There was a major impact but little visible damage to my rear bumper; though, the woman who ran into my car at a red light had significant damage to her front bumper. The whole process of exchanging insurance information is sketchy. It feels like you’re being violated even when you’re not the person responsible. And the police…local law enforcement?!

The insurance company is very strange. They seem to out source their policies. I got transferred to three different companies before I got to the one person who had the complete file on the car that hit mine. I had to wait for someone to come over to get a look at the non-visible damage to my car, with my luck nothing is wrong, but in all actuality there could be catastrophic damage to my ride. One thing I have to say about the call transferring, I understand. For security reasons, you do not want to have all this information in one place. There are probably other reasons for sub-companies…though getting transferred to different 1-800 numbers is a little annoying.

It makes me wonder about the whole universal health care. If they had universal car insurance, that could be very scary. It is intimidating enough with all these different providers giving you different estimates and one business is more credible than another. With universal health care, there is a downside which is quality. People use cars every single day; I want to make sure my car is running at its best after an accident. There is a draw back, not everyone can afford good insurance. Yet, universality will level the field where everyone can use it. Unfortunately, a lot of how policies work is due to money…see last weeks post about silly college conference alignments. I don’t think there is a correct answer to universality, though I look forward to people’s trials and errors.

Something really bothered me about the whole accident. After making sure the driver and I were okay. The police came and I got the vibe that they have to work in an environment were people are guilty until proven innocent. It felt like the police think you’re lying all the time. For me, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. People are going to do good and bad things. I don’t mind being a fool. I will give people twenty chances. There are good people out there, at least more good people than bad.

There is one lesson I learned…I missed out on the Norman’s Dump the Pump. If I were riding the bus, I would have never been in a fender bender. (Written on June 17, 2010)

Let’s go back to Thursday. I had only been driving for fifteen minutes before I was rear ended at the W. Main Street & Interstate 76 near the Super-Walmart. The woman and I exchanged information. The cops came and since there was no visible damage recommended that I either exchange information or file a report, in which both insurance companies would be reported of the incident and she would get a ticket. I decided against the second option because I didn’t think she deserved a ticket.

After driving back home I contacted her insurance carrier so I could have the claim filed. The insurance company took my contact information and they said they would have to contact the person who was under the policy, some doctor or the person who rear-ended me.

I called the insurance company, Monday, to find out if they had filed a claim in my fender-bender. I found out the person who pays the policy, not the woman who rear ended me, did not want to pay to fix my car unless I had a police report.

So I went back to the police department to have a report filed. Now, I have to wait a few days before the case is completed. I have to fax/email the case to the insurance company and we’ll see what happens afterward. I went to a body shop to get an estimate on the damages to my car. It turns out the bumper needs repainting which means the total is around $430, I should have stayed on the path of being a mechanic.

My high school reunion was awesome. I wanted to talk to everyone but I was unable too. I talked to a lot of people most of them did not want to talk to me but their where more than enough people who I still consider friends which I liked seeing face to face.
