Review: Black Adam: The Dark Age #1-6 (DC Comics, ’07-’08)

The Dark Age is a spin-off miniseries which combines what is going on in after 52 to events transpiring in Countdown in the life of Black AdamPeter Tomasi writes with art by Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy, Norman Rapmund, and Rodney Ramos.  This is one of the more interesting minis because Peter Tomasi is writing it and I was very interested in seeing how Tomasi’s voice is shown through this series.

Black Adam’s story is similar to Ralph Dibny in 52 where a man goes to great lengths to bring back his love.  Black Adam has an ace in the hole; he has allied himself with the trapped Felix Faust which in turn Faust has granted Adam the powers of his dead love, Isis.  An international manhunt is going on where everyone is looking for Teth-Adam.  I really liked how it showed the human side of Teth-Adam and only when the situation got bad would he transform into the Black Adam hybrid.  This miniseries was a very fast read.

I would buy this miniseries in trade format knowing that I also had 52 in trade.  If I did not have or read 52, this is still a good miniseries though it loses the punch with how much Black Adam really wants Isis back.  The miniseries as a whole added another chapter to Black Adam’s life.  The story was a good individual read about love lost.

“Cruel to be kind.”
