Last night at 1:30 am Pacific (3:30 am Central) I arrived home after an exhausting 21 hour day. My cab driver, after I finally got one -- lines were long and taxis were few -- and I gave an airport worker a ride home which was a bumptious experience. In fact, the whole drive home was an adventure. Fortunately, no accident ensued and I arrived safe enough. After chipping ice off the gate, I was even able to get into the house where Mark and Kai waited for me.
Today it has snowed and iced and been generally interesting. There's about 3-ish inches of snow, with about 2 inches of ice, and now a few more inches of snow on top of that. It makes walking tricky, and Kai definitely has mixed feelings about it. Cold = good. Snow = good. Ice is not good. The ice coated everything. Here's what it looks like on the side of our car, to give you an idea.
It has made some interesting sculptural effects with the potted plants. And it's lovely on branches and berries.
Neighbor kids (their parents, really) made a lovely snow fort. I haven't seen one this good since I was a kid in Massachusetts. They ran out before they could roof it with snow, but still, it's pretty fine. It's tough to see inside. There are three sleeping bags in there, for all the kidlets. What fun! And of course, this is a time when creativity helps in getting around. Fortunately, we live close to shopping, and this neighbor took advantage of that. I imagine some child is wondering where his sleigh is.
The leaves of our neighbor's liquidamber tree are really magnificent -- they're coated with ice and sound like wind chimes. The branches are quite bowed. We hope they won't break. This is one of the few times when we're glad there aren't any big trees near us. Lots of branches down, and power lines with them.
