Welcome, 2011, and behave yourself

We started the year by having a small party with the usual suspects at our house New Year's Day.  It was lovely and low key and I drank much champagne and slept like a baby last night.  I think I should do that all the time now. A bottle or two of champagne, and I sleep like a log. At least, now I know the secret!

We provided Wolferams english muffins and smoked salmon in various forms. And Argyle Extended Tirage, which I highly recommend. It's my new best friend. joyce_mcclure swept in wearing, for my delight, her awesome mink coat (which she knew I wanted to see) and bringing yet more champers, fudge and fixings for real bagels and lox. Lox was brought by shelly_rae  who also supplied (and left) cannoli and a fabulous cheese. Truly, a fabulous cheese. I think I may have dreamed of it.
varina8  supplied carrots and celery sticks and I thinks something else, but I concentrated on those with dip so I got something healthy to eat. And the lovely scarlettina  brought the necessary bagels while melkahb and ironymaiden did their best to also keep us on the new year straight and narrow with yogurt and fruit.  We were well supplied and ate a lot.  Or at least I did, and by the fact that there wasn't much left, I suspect everyone else did too.

I pulled out the Scrabble board and joyce_mcclure , scarlettina , and I played a game. I am proud of putting down "weft" and "trope" but really didn't do much else worthy of notice. Ms. J played "goiter" which was then improved upon with an "s." That was impressive as was Ms. S's "played" and "tuned." J and S battled like titans, hurling down tiles like two warlords.  By the end game, we'd even gathered a crowd.

joyce_mcclure put up a good fight and was a worthy opponent. Ms. J, once again carried the day. One of these days, we shall get Mark to play again, and then we may see a different story.  markbourne  has yet to be defeated at Scrabble, although he is very modest about it.  Of course, he cut his teeth playing with John Varley, and I can tell you there isn't a more serious Scrabble player in the world than Herb Varley.

Our neighbors, on both sides, came to visit. We are pleased that we have created another Dr. Who addict in our 10-year-old next door neighbor H.  That quite pleased me. He spent his visit in the Temple of Dude watching new Who with his dad.

When it got dark, we went for a walk and admired those lights that were still up. Many had gone dark already, including the famous local "Seizures Palace" as Mark calls it.  But here you go courtesy of YouTube, and y'all come by next year with a donation for one of the several charities they support.

After our guests were gone, the house was clean, and we still had champagne left, we adjourned ourselves with a bottle of champagne and carrot sticks to the Temple of Dude and watched "Hellboy II."  It was great fun and we were happy.
