What I find perplexing and possibly repugnant are "designated protest areas". Really? Yes, let's protest exactly where the gov't we're protesting says we should. Ridiculous.

I get that, to an extent. I mean, as it is, a lot of types of protest do require approval, and for good reason. Like, no, you don't get to protest on Front Street while the G20 is happening in the Convention Centre, because that's impractical and could be dangerous. And no, you don't get to march down Yonge Street without the approval of the police, because that's annoying half the city and potentially disruptive to emergency vehicles.

But I can understand how it would upset you (and others) that there'd be designated protest areas covering only little bits of the city, when what there should be is designated non-protest areas, covering only the little bits of the city that need it, for one reason or another.

I understand why they make those designations. They want to control potential chaos. Governments fear chaos. It just seems really silly to me is all.

I've known quite a few radical anarchists in my day and I can imagine the scoffing that would go on at the thought of a designated protest area.

Chaos is more dangerous than order though, no?

If the order created is meant to control the people then that can also be a form of harm.

For example "If all you black folk use this here designated fountain then none of the white folk will get upset."

Protest should be a right of all humans. In Canada we have that right, most times without fear of death.

That's true. I guess I just feel that most of the order we have here now (not all, but most) is meant to prevent harm. And in that sense, I'd say that most people - not just the government - fear chaos.

I agree. Most people fear chaos.

I was raised in a culture of rebellion though, so I guess I understand that side of things better.

That's not so bad but what's ridiculous is the CSU consulting with the university on where they can protest during the next BoG meeting. No really this was actually done in September 2008.
