One addendum to my post from yesterday about the blogging article in the Times. Okay, maybe two.

1-The comments. In places, they are interesting. And, while I certainly understand how someone could be perturbed by the fact that this article (a) yesterday was linked to from near the top of the Times' home page, and; (b) will appear on the cover of the magazine this weekend, I admit, I'm uncertain as to why so many of the commenters have such a hostile reaction to "blogging" in general.

"Blogging" is just "writing". "Blogging" can be everything from gawker.com to writing about knitting or rock 'n' roll to anything else. (Some might even have you believe you could blog about rock 'n' roll knitting.) It's just another medium. When someone uses the word "blogging", what is it I wonder that all of these people are conjuring up in their heads?

And this: "Like your tattoos, I'm fairly sure you'll regret all this by the time you get into your 40s."

Don't the people leaving comments like this realize that they're totally feeding her?

2-I kinda like that the last page of the issue that preceded this one had this piece about getting a tattoo, and it included this line:

"The tattoo was supposed to remind me of what I tended to forget every day, to be less selfish, or less insular, to remember promises, to try to think less of my own largely imaginary suffering and devote some time and energy to considering the suffering of others."

I don't think that a tattoo on myself could ever really accomplish that, but I still really like the sentiment.
