Does anyone know what the deal is with this song? Was War (the band) a one-hit wonder? Did they only exist for this song ( Read more... )

War did Lowrider, and maybe a couple others I can't recall. I think I have them on an eight-track around here somewhere. Edwin Starr sang War (what is it good for? . . .), and nothing else that I'm aware of. I think this is a classic MP3 mislabelling.

This DJ agrees. Edwin Starr did the song you're thinking of, and it was his signature hit. Ironically enough, he passed away just after the start of the war a few weeks back. Ol' Edwin was always sort of gimmicky, he made a big splash in the 1960's by dressing up as a superspy and singing some song called "Agent Double-O Soul." When that gig ran out of steam, I guess he turned to protesting the war, which everyone else was righteously doing back then too ( ... )
