Drum Struck

So last night I went to see DrumStruck with Q. She got comp tickets through some program affiliated with her job, which also enabled us to get 2-for-1 drinks before the performance (tipsyness is what's up!!!). I feel VERY dual about that experience ( Read more... )

I don't know how to form the words at the moment, but it is making me work on not being so self-critical about my body. I'll come back to that point later.

Ha! I have that feeling (that I can very cruelly form the words for) everytime I see someone that's BMW wearing a bikini/midrift baring shit/something that doesn't fit after I spent too much time in the mirror fretting over lovely lady lumps that aren't in the back or the front.

Yesterday on the bus I had one of these moments. This chick (lets call her Boriqua Belly) had on the traditional a little too tight boot cut jeans and a cut off shirt that made it perfectly clear that she is enjoying the 'gifts of motherhood'.

I know I'm probably taking something that you meant as a positive and using it as an opportunity to bitch about BMW folks wearing tiny clothing.

If you're being too sensitive, I'll come over there and be sensitive with you.

I have that feeling. Like... Not quite EEEEEWWWW!!! But close.

I was reading this Friday at work like WTF?! It's weird how I can rarely enjoy anything anymore without seeing stuff like this.

It's quite revealing of the state of American affairs when African culture is 'finally good enough' to be appropriated.

I know that sounds weird---but I'm just thinking of how black American culture gets whitewashed on top of how other poc cultures get exoticized over African cultures. Well, I'm thinking of Disney animation too as I type this...

"It's weird how I can rarely enjoy anything anymore without seeing stuff like this."

That's EXACTLY how I felt. I was all "damn, I can't enjoy shit now!!"

"It's quite revealing of the state of American affairs when African culture is 'finally good enough' to be appropriated."

Reminds me of that line from Hotel Rwanda "You're not even a nigger, you're an African." *smh*

"I know that sounds weird"

Nah, I think I understand. It was once (not to say that it still isn't, but you know) demonized and is now "appreciated" enough to be used for capitalistic commercial purposes. It IS weird.
