Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways

Aug 20, 2010 20:02

So. We seem to have skipped actual BW/PotW discussion and gone straight to S1 overviews, but I don't like leaving them out, so I'm doing them anyway. XP

So here we go into Nine's goodbye... hold on tight, boys and girls, this one's gonna be a bumpy ride and not everyone's coming out alive...

Vague refs for Torchwood and Last of the Time Lords.
'BUT YOU HAVE NO WEA-PONS. NO DE-FEN-SES. NO PLAN.' 'Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death.' )

1x13 the parting of the ways, 1x12 bad wolf

Yeah - and I think Dalek made such a point of shifting that, look at Adam just about quoting the "defeated by a flight of stairs" thing at it, and then it just flies up them. And yeah, they'd already introduced the concept that Daleks could fly, but the popular perception's always been "Daleks can't get up and down stairs", and then the ep brings up that perception for the sole purpose of saying "Except, actually they can, get back behind the sofa".

Yup. These ain't your daddy's Daleks, son.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? That works on me, but my friends still don't get why I'm scared of the Midnight entity...

The Midnight entity is creepy as all get out! Anything that can take the Doctor over gets extra points on the Big Bad scale. But we never saw it and we never had any real understanding of what it was, what it's goals were. It was utterly alien and certainly brought the worst out in everyone (which was probably the situation but could have been some influence it had on human minds). How can you fight something like that that has no form? Sucking it out the airlock only worked because it was in a body at the time but I don't believe for a moment that that killed it.

I probably shouldn't be talking about this before bedtime.

Or how you'd stop it without sacrificing its host. Or even if there's anything left of the host, in which case, the question becomes how do you stop it getting near you in the first place?

If you're thinking telepathic influence, I'd think it didn't need it. The repetition is enough to get people on edge, and once you get humans scared... and then you pick out the most vulnerable, which in this case is also the only guy still trying to keep the others calm, and completely undermine him... And once they're primed for a scapegoat, which, honestly, is easy with humans if you know what you're doing - it's horrible to think of your own species like that, but it's true, that mob mentality and fear of the Other is...

Yeah. The only influence it needed was its control over him at the end.

How can you fight something like that that has no form? Sucking it out the airlock only worked because it was in a body at the time but I don't believe for a moment that that killed it.

Definitely didn't kill it. It was living out there to begin with... it didn't come back because it failed, it knew there wouldn't be a way back into anyone's head.

I probably shouldn't be talking about this before bedtime.

No, probably not... *pats your couch* It's a good couch.

Or how do you even tell where it is at any given time?

If you're thinking telepathic influence, I'd think it didn't need it.

I was, but sadly, I think you're right that it wouldn't need it.

Definitely didn't kill it. It was living out there to begin with... it didn't come back because it failed, it knew there wouldn't be a way back into anyone's head.

Or maybe it got enough of what it wanted not to need to. It might feed on paranoia for all we know.

We know it likes to knock on walls...

Why go after a new food source, then? Unless - oh, no, of course, an easier food source! Anything that feeds on emotions has got to be a great manipulator, or it runs the risk of starvation, but anything around it has evolved to resist manipulation... humans, though, are so easy to whip up into mobs... if they'd thrown the Doctor out, it could have ridden back to civilisation in Skye's body and imagine the damage it could have done then...

But once they threw out Skye, it wasn't hungry enough to feel like trying again. If the resort managers don't listen to the Doctor's warnings, though, it could get another chance. ...I don't even know how to make an emoticon that conveys the horror I feel at that thought.

Maybe it doesn't want to 'overgraze'. Let the cattle relax and lower their guards again before stampeding them again. If you'll pardon the mixed metaphor.

Smorgasbord.

And I suspect that's exactly what happened, though it might actually prefer keeping a lower profile, taking a shuttle like that now and again rather than storming the castle and risk scaring the food away permanently.

Why do I keep talking about this before bedtime?

Oh, I like mixed metaphors. XD And that makes sense. It was so easy to stop them from listening to sense when the Doctor was standing right in front of them, once the trouble's over and he's gone, it wouldn't expect them to take his advice then either.

Smorgasbord.

I should probably mention, I read that in Ten's voice. And it makes it really, really creepy.

Could be. It's probably clever enough to. On the other hand, if it gets curious about where these so badly-protected beings come from, and starts wondering how much better it could do for itself with a larger food supply... *shudder*

Why do I keep talking about this before bedtime?

Cos you're a masochist?

And I'm sure, too, that folks who weren't there might write a lot of what happened off as a sort of 'mass' hysteria.

That is a word he's enjoy saying. In this context, though, very creepy.

Forget the suitcase, there's storage pods worth of bad in that.

Especially if the Doctor can't find anyone among the people in charge who actually knows who he is - if he can call on his reputation, he can add a lot of credence to their story, but if no one on the planet's heard of him, he'll just look like another hysterical passenger.

Oh, yeah.

And that video works so well it scares me. XD
