So. We seem to have skipped actual BW/PotW discussion and gone straight to S1 overviews, but I don't like leaving them out, so I'm doing them anyway. XP
So here we go into Nine's goodbye... hold on tight, boys and girls, this one's gonna be a bumpy ride and not everyone's coming out alive...
Vague refs for Torchwood and Last of the Time Lords.
Long Game recap - it's a bit spoilery, putting that there, considering the TARDIS team won't find out where they are quite yet...
100 years later - They were set back about 90 years last time, he would have been expecting to find them now round about the point where he thought they'd be then, no wonder it took him a while to figure it out.
Right - this is the ep where I get a bit lost, cos I hate reality TV and wouldn't go near BIg Brother in a hazmat suit. I'll follow what I can though...
"What's your name, sweetheart?" "The Doctor, I think."
It's cute when he gets fuzzy about his name, I keep wondering how Ten would have played somethng similar. And Lynda is so sweet, right from the start, she's immediately there to look after the new bloke when the other housemates are complaining. (Also, if the male housemate isn't gay, I'll eat my hat. And I like my hat.)
"Bad Wolf", in which the Doctor is evicted, Rose Tyler loses the Weakest Link, and Captain Jack Harkness gets his kit off
And Rose wakes up with some bloke being predatory at her. Not as good a landing as the Doctor's, and then suddenly she's on the Weakest Link! No wonder she panics...
Pausing here for a note - took me a while to get how scary the Anne-droid is supposed to be, because, yeah, okay, robot that kills you with lasers when you get voted off, but the Anne bit. Because we don't have anyone as scary as Anne Robinson in Australia. Our Weakest Link was hosted by Cornelia Frances, who's very good at playing bitchy characters, and kept up a harsh persona well for the show, but is actually quite nice underneath, and she always kept her snide remarks focussed on how the game itself was going, how people were voting, whether she thought they'd banked too soon or missed an easy question (and yeah, okay, I said I hate reality TV, but, quiz show, so it was worth it for a while). So when I caught a little bit of the British version and saw Robinson make an attack on one of the contestant's personal lives? ...holy shit.
Now I get it. And now I get Rose's horrified look when she figures it out.
Jack is adjusting a bit better, but then he woke up with two robots flirting at him, so, you know...
Interesting to see how each of them describes where they came from:
NIne doesn't yet, he's still struggling with the amnesia, transmat's probably designed for humans only, so it scrambles his brains a bit more than the others', but later he lists the last couple of places they'd been and says, "We were together, we were laughing" and thinks of Rose and Jack but doesn't name anyone.
Rose: "I was travelling, with the Doctor and a man called Captain Jack."
Jack: "I was with the Doctor."
So Jack only mentions the Doctor, Rose mentions both, and Nine wasn't using any names.
"Defabricator" = robotspeak for "inducer of fangirl squee", yes? Though really I'd prefer my naked Jack to come with naked Ianto or naked Doctor.
"Does exactly what it says on the tin". Wait, I know that phrase, that's a TROPE! I'll go look it up after, might be the Trope Namer? (Went over to TvTropes to look, and it's not, it's just a lampshade. Sad now.)
And Lynda's insecure about winning... and she really is sweet, how HAS no one ever told her that before?
Kyoto in 1336. I wish we could have seen that, I badly want to know what went down there. Especially since they obviously were still in some kind of trouble when they left.
And I love how his confusion suddenly settles into resolve when he works out how powerful the transmat has to be and what that means.
"I'm getting out. I'm gonna find my friends, and then I'm gonna find you."
Is this floor 500? If it's not, looks like they've redesigned all the control rooms to look like it.
Did the Anne-droid just say they have a month called "Who"?
The Great Cobol Pyramid is built on Torchwood's remains. Canary Wharf, I'd assume. And Torchwood is famous now? They really do suck at being secret.
And Rose's laughter seems a bit hysterical to me. She's playing to win not cos she thinks she can, but cos the whole thing is absurd and what else can she do?
She's starting to realise something's wrong when Fitch starts begging, and, oh gods, the look on her face when she realises what the rules are...
The eviction looks so cheesy when you don't know what's about to happen - the holding hands, Lynda's "I'm so sorry", the hugs, and Nine's just "whatever" and I love it. And then when you go back and rewatch it...
"And then we're gonna get you!" Does it have to sound so cheerful?
Love the misunderstandings on both sides - the Doctor thinks they're making a big stupid deal out of nothing, and they think he's an insensitive jerk who doesn't care that their friend's about to die....
...and there she goes, and his whole demeanour changes. "What was that?"
And there's where they realise he really didn't know...
Backstory, hello! Rumours of something else interfering with the station, and our first glimpse of the Controller -
And hello, angry Nine. Moreso with every answer, and the housemates can't understand his horror at the whole system because they've lived coping with it for their whole lives. "They get to live, isn't that enough?"
The Doctor worries about Rose, but not Jack - he's always that bit less protective of Jack, but then Jack's been looking after himself for some time.
You're right, Jack, I really do not wanna think about where you were hiding that.
Aha, placement of the solar flare early -
Bad Wolf Corporation. Said directly to Rose this time, oh! Bad Wolf TV, in the Long Game, how'd I miss that? "Different places, different times, like it's written all over the universe. If the Bad Wolf are in charge of this quiz, then maybe I'm not here by mistake. Someone's been plannin' this." Good girl, Rose.
And NIne making trouble to get evicted, because he knows they won't kill him. "Stay with me, I promise I'll get you out alive." She can't blame you for trying. *hugs Nine*
And now he gets it, at first sight of the corridor. "This is Satellite Five."
And so blithely tells Lynda how he was here a hundred years ago. XD
You get executed for not having a TV? O_O
Oh, I'd have loved to see Lynda as a companion. "I wouldn't get in the way.' "Wouldn't mind if you did, Lynda-with-a-Y."
Bad Wolf logo on the wall. I love how they're both picking up the same clues in different ways. (And how Rose is getting them first.)
"They are no one." Same as the database said last time, only this time the Controller's being protective.
And Jack getting himself out. XD
"Two hearts, that's him. Which floor?" I dunno why I love this line, I just do.
"We get newsflashes telling us when it's safe to breathe outside." How can they live like that?
"The human race - brainless sheep, being fed on a diet of - mind you..." Because yes, people can complain about "the idiot box" and reality TV in general was a terrible, terrible thing to inflict on humanity, but you always get those few that are just good.
You know, just one time I'd like to see them go to the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire and it actually be there.
"But that was me, I did that!" "And that was the start of it. A hundred years of hell." Nice job breaking it, Doctor. Though really, what else could he do?
"I was just saying hello." "For you, that's flirting." I don't think he's really that mad about Jack flirting with Lynda at all, to be honest. (Especially since if it hadn't all gone to shit, the four of them would have run off together and there would have been a lot more Jack/Lynda flirting.) Yelling at Jack helps him deflect his own guilt while he tries to fix what he broke. "This whole Bad Wolf thing is tied up with me, someone's manipulating my entire life", and he HATES that.
Rose in the head-to-head and she's doomed. Oh, the "Face of Boe" question, he keeps being associated wih Bad Wolf too, which makes sense because she did, after all, create him...
ROOOOOOOOOOSE! And Jack's yelling and screaming while the Doctor just shuts down, I don't think he even hears what the security bloke's saying to him.
And no discussion necessary, just "let's do it" and they go.
Storming the castle, and I love how he just throws the gun at Davitch. And Davitch just puts it down! And asks for permission to put it down!
And Jack just ignores "out-of-bounds" to go into the TARDIS and do some REAL scanning.
"It's not our fault, we were just doing our jobs." "And with that sentence, you just lost the right to even talk to me, now back off." I love when the Doctor gets on his high horse, whether it's justified or not, and this time, oh yes it is.
And here's the girl who supposedly can't even recognise his existence calling him by name. "They don't watch the programs, I could hide you inside the games, knew that you would find me."
Hundreds of years? Guiding the Eath for centuries, when did they start?!
"My masters, they fear the Doctor." And they should.
Hello, good-news-bearing Jack!
"But you killed her!" "Oh, do you think?"
And Rose is alive! And only when the boys know that do we see her, and haha, Dalek POV and everyone knows who the ones hiding in the shadows are now.
Oh, I love the Controller. "You can kill me, for I have brought your destruction." At least she gets to die knowing that.
Haha, Davitch likes Jack.
And the Doctor's smiling just a bit this time when he tells Jack not to flirt.
"Someone's been playing a long game, controlling the human race from behdin the scenes for generations." Not the Jagrafess's game, it never was, and he knows those ships and so does Jack...
I still want to know - are the Daleks Jack's 'worst creatures imaginable", we never really found that out.
"I will talk to the Doctor." "Oh will you, that's nice." I love it when he's insolent to Daleks.
And threatening Rose? Very bad idea.
This needs full quotage:
"No."
"EX-PLAIN YOUR-SELF."
"I said no."
"WHAT IS THE MEA-NING OF THIS NE-GA-TIVE?"
"It means no."
"BUT SHE WILL BE DES-TROYED."
"No. Cos this is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna rescue her. I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet, and then I'm gonna save the Earth, and then, just to finish off, I'm gonna wipe every stinking Dalek out of the sky."
"BUT YOU HAVE NO WEA-PONS. NO DE-FEN-SES. NO PLAN."
"Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death. Rose?"
"Yes, Doctor?"
"I'm coming to get you."
I can't even comment on that. I just love the whole thing.
Oh, and I always say "Doesn't that scare you to death" with him. Just have to.
Oh, question though - I keep hearing that "I'm coming to get you" is some kind of Big Brother ref, but I can't seem to find out why. Can anyone fill me in on that?
Next up: The Parting of the Ways, featuring a Dalek with a creepily low voice, a depressing hologram of Eccleston, and a surprise appearance by Barty Crouch Jr!

Yeah, definitely need to type faster.

Recap - mostly of people dying and the Daleks looking scary, ending on "I'm coming to get you."
"Parting of the Ways", in which everybody dies, one way or another
The Daleks trying to get Rose to tell them what the Doctor will do.
And the TARDIS just flying in, and they RAMMED ONE. THEY RAMMED A DALEK SHIP!!!! XD
Rose's face when she hears the materialisation sound! And they materialise AROUND HER! Jack kills the Dalek, temporal grace is offline, then.
And the hug! "Why don't I get a hug?" "Come on then!" "No, I was talking to him." XD
And Jack thought the Time War was a legend. "Now it looks like they died for nothing."
Aha, defensive shields. "Null points!" I love it when the Doctor speaks French.
Oncoming Storm, oh yes! I love it when he pulls that out.
"I think you're forgetting something. I'm the Doctor, and if there's one thing I can do, it's talk. I've got 5 billion languages, and you haven't got one way of stopping me, so if anybody's gonna shut up, IT'S YOU!" And, haha, they do.
Villain exposition. How long have they been doing this, though? When, in Earth's timeline, did the Daleks disappear?
"That makes them half-human."
"Those words are blasphemy!" Yes, Russell, they are. XD
Daleks using words like blasphemy and blessed, that's just wrong...
And he's almost crying for them now - "driven mad by the stink of humanity", "you hate your own existence". And that despair when he goes back into the TARIDS, just leaning against the door...
...and comes back to the Gamestation terrified.
Not enough transmat power to get everyone back to Earth, and it's not like they're much safer there anyway.
And Jack picks up on the Delta Wave, I LOVE when the Doctor has companions who can actually anticipate the technobabble, and he's so happy when he gets a solution. XD
Oh, no Rose, don't get jealous, she wouldn't be REPLACING you...
And Jack knows he's gonna die. But they're both worth it. And I should stick to typing WITHOUT looking at the computer, cos I just had to go back and see the kiss again. I don't think I can possibly EVER convey how happy it makes me that the Doctor's been kissed by a man onscreen.
Everyone's gonna be quoting "You are worth fighting for" and "I was much better off as a coward" but I will anyway. "See you in hell." And Rose looks so beautiful in this scene.
Jack goes down to rally the people on floor 0.
"There's an army about to invade this station. I need every last citizen to mount a defence."
Daleks don't exist? Then what's outside your station, Roderick? And you never knew what happened to them, don't you think things that just disappear can come back as suddenly?
There's one volunteer, though.
"As for the rest of you. The Daleks will enter the station at floor 494, and as far as I can tell, they'll head up, not down. But that's not a promise. So here's a few words of advice. Keep quiet. And if you hear fighting up above? If you hear us dying? Then tell me that the Daleks aren't real. Don't make a sound."
He's so disappointed.
Rose still hasn't got why they can't just go back and change things.
The Doctor says they could run.
"You'd never do that." "But you could ask. Never even occurred to you, did it?"
This is why he loves her. And why I love her. *snuggles Rose*
And he's so good at pretending he has hope... all to send her away. And then that moment of hesitation before he activates the fast-return swtich.
"Let the TARDIS die." How could she?
"Do that for me, Rose Tyler. Have a fantastic life."
And Mickey comes running, and oh Rose...
Jack's too quick. "You took her home, didn't you? The Delta Wave - is it ever gonna be ready?"
And the Emperor knows: "Everything must die by your hand. ... If I am God, the creator of all things, then what does make you, Doctor?"
"Never doubted him, never will." *hugs Jack so hard*
People complain that Rose was worth saving and Jack supposedly wasn't. But Jack's a soldier. That's the difference... isn't it?
Even the Dalek Emperor doesn't know what Bad Wolf is. And now the Doctor's more spooked than ever.
Jackie and Mickey being all normal and it's not helping. How's Rose supposed to just sit there and eat chips while the Doctor's dying? "You don't just give up. You don't just let things happen. You make stand, you say no, you have the guts to do what's right when everyone else just runs away and I can't -"
Lynda's so brave. She really would have been so good with them.
The Dalek fleet is so, so chilling.
Bad Wolf on the ground. Right in front of her where she can't miss it, and the graffiti all along the wall, and finally she gets it. She can get back!
And Rose being clever and happy and resolute. XD
"There's nothing left for me here." Mickey, that's a breakup. Okay? Do you get it now?
I love the Anne-droid killing Daleks. She doesn't last long enough, though...
"You can't! You don't exist!" I hate to tell a dead man "I told you so". I will, though.
Jackie tries to dissuade her, but that was never gonna work.
"Dad wouldn't give up. ... He'd tell me to try anything. If I could save the Doctor's life, try anything." Didn't I say she's like her dad?
Davitch's confession is rather cute.
And here comes Jackie with the truck... and the most triumphal version of the Westminster Bridge music we've had yet! "You were right about your dad, sweetheart. He was full of mad ideas, and that's exactly what he would have done..." Well, of course she was. XD
"My vision is impaired!" And that's what it takes to start them shooting, apparently.
And they're going after Lynda... through the WINDOW. Horrible way to die...
The Doctor's face when he hears her scream... and he won't even get time to grieve till the end of TCI.
Jack, frantic, last one alive. "Finish that thing and kill them!"
Emperor: "Finish that thing and kill mankind." He still hurries, though.
And Rose looks into the vortex. She doesn't even look scared, just - amazed.
Jack just stands there and faces them. "I kind of figured that."
"I want to see you become like me. Hail the Doctor, the Great Exterminator."
"What are you, Doctor? Coward or killer?" "Coward. Any day."
He could destroy Gallifrey for the sake of the universe. But not Earth. Not even knowing there are other humans out there... oh, Nine.
And here's Bad Wolf, just when he needs her. "I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself." I love how she's trying to explain it to him. "I want you safe. My Doctor. Protected from the false god." And I love that line so much, cos it's not just Rose talking here, it's the TARDIS. Claiming him and making sure he knows it.
"You are tiny. I can see the whole of time and space, every atom of your existence, and I divide them. Everything must come to dust. Everything dies. The Time War ends."
This is hard. This is so hard, cos I've been crying since "I want you safe", cos this -
And then he takes it from her. He can't destroy a planet to save the universe, but himself to save one person? No hesitation.
And there it goes, back into the console, but not all of it. Breathing out isn't like breathing in, you can't expel something from your system as easily as it can invade... He could take all the energy from Rose, but there's just enough left in him to kill.
Jack wakes up in the dust and finds them gone. Does he know the Doctor abandoned him? Or does he assume they think he's dead?
Rose remembers the vortex energy as singing...
The Doctor's looking at the scanner, something he doesn't like. It's telling him not all the energy's back? Or is he looking at Jack?
Barcelona, and he's trying to be cheerful, but she knows he's hiding something and there it is... "It's a bit dodgy, this process." I'll say. Falling apart in an Escher painting, anyone?
He's trying to explain regeneration, but she's not getting it. "I'm not gonna see you again. Before I go, I just wanna tell you, you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I." Yes, Nine, you really were. And you have better last words than Jack, so, yes.
And hello, Ten! I love that his first word is "hello".
"New teeth. That's weird. So where was I? Oh, that's right. Barcelona." I'm gonna go back and watch that bit again, just cos I can. *snuggles Ten*
Well, alright, technically I shouldn't be all about Ten yet, cos I wasn't the first time through, I was very much with the Nine-love, and Ten was just this new bloke I wasn't sure of yet. I didn't fall in love with him until TCE... I just can't help it, going back, cos Ten's my Doctor, so I can't get back that feeling of "well, who are you then?"
Next up: Well, technically it should be Christmas Invasion, but I'm actually gonna do Born Again as well, so... yeah.
