1. What do you make of Mickey in this episode? Why does he reject the Doctor's offer to travel? Mickey has had a pretty shit time of it. I mean, he was suspected of murdering his girlfriend, but he couldn't really defend himself. He knows where Rose is, but he'd sound like a nutter if he said that she went into a blue box with a strange man and then they both disappeared. So he has to keep his mouth shut about what happened to her while at the same time being held in suspicion of her murder. I do love that he actually get a chance to prove his usefulness in his episode. But I think in the end, it really is just too much for Mickey. He's not ready to leave with the Doctor at this point in time.
2. What about Rose in this episode? How does she handle her relationships with Jackie and Mickey? How committed do you think she is to this new life with the Doctor and how does that impact her relationships and her life back on Earth? I love that Rose gets her Tardis key in this episode. I think that this two-parter for her is all about confirming her choice to be with the Doctor. The first time she left it was a spur of the moment decision. Now she knows what she's getting into. She gets the key. She packs a bag. She's all in.
And the Doctor is clearly already incredibly attached to Rose too. He's known all along that there was a way to end it. But he could save the world and lose her and that just wasn't an acceptable option. But Rose is Rose. She's willing to die if it means saving the rest of the world. But she's also not going to die without going down fighting. She does whatever she can think of to live. I love that about her.
I don't think that Rose is a bad person for choosing the Doctor over Jackie and Mickey. But uh, I do think she is a bit insensitive in how she handles everything? From their perspective, she's been gone for a YEAR. Like, that's pretty awful, to have a loved one missing for a year. It's hard for Rose to really feel that though because she's only been gone a couple of days from her point of view. But in the end, she has to do what she wants to do with her life.
3. What do you think of Jackie in this episode? Was she right to call the hotline? How does she handle everything that happens with Rose this episode? I think Jackie was absolutely right to call the hotline. Her daughter disappears with this man for a year and she won't say anything about where she was or what she did and when Rose comes back, aliens invade London. Like, Jackie doesn't know what is going on. I completely understand why she called the hotline. And like Jackie has probably spent the last year going through hell, not knowing where Rose is and being afraid that she's dead. So, yeah, I get why she slapped the Doctor. And I really admire that in the end, she was able to let Rose go. Like idk. If I were Jackie, I would have probably thrown myself at my daughters feet and not let go of her legs until she agreed to stay. lol. Jackie is worried about Rose and doesn't really want her to go and I totally get it. The Doctor can't promise that Rose will be safe and Jackie doesn't like that, but in the end it's Rose's choice and Jackie has to let her go.
4. What do you make of the Slitheen plot as a whole? Is the idea of the Slitheen wanting to destroy the Earth for profit new and interesting? Is the whole farting alien thing too much? I am not a Slitheen fan, tbh. I mean the idea of it being more a business thing than an Evil Alien thing is nice, I guess. But meh. They're a bit too silly for me to take seriously.
Other Thoughts CRAP. I MEANT TO WRITE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS. But uh, the Doctor is kind of a dick at the end of the episode. Like just because he doesn't want to deal with ~domestics~ he tempts Rose away from her mum. He won't even do tea with Jackie. Like, that really wasn't asking much. Just... tea. But the Doctor is an ass and doesn't want to, so he describes some really cool things to Rose and she runs off with him, leaving Jackie behind.
Just thinking this up, maybe he felt kind of uncomfortable around Jackie after the incident with her in her bathrobe and such. I'm sure that was quite awkward for the Doctor, and he must have had a hard time with it. And it must be weird, always observing from above and suddenly being asked to do the ordinary things like have tea. Petty things.
Tbh that was probably my least favourite Doctor-and-Rose moment, because it really feels like THE ONE TIME where he failed the most at treating her like an equal. At least when he sends her away, dickish as it is, he's just trying to keep her safe. This is just him being a douche. YOU COULDN'T HANG AROUND WHILE SHE ATE DINNER, DOCTOR? REALLY? YOU HAD TO LEAVE RIGHT AWAY. YOU HAVE A GODDAMN TIME MACHINE.
It does set up nicely the contrast with Ten in TCI, but it still makes me side-eye Nine a lot.
