Great meta.

I was amazed too by how Asylum really played with Moff's key themes that we've seen threaded through series 5 and 6, like you said, all of it was encapsulated right there in that ep. In fact, all of it encapsulated in a cpuple of the parts of dialogue that you quoted.

I like your reading of series 5 being about giving the Doctor back his understanding of the magic of the Universe and the miracles in it again, series 6 being about giving him a family. Series 7 i hope is all about who is the Doctor...not to us or to his companions even - but who is he to himself? Which is really the same thing as what you said about: what is his purpose now.

The problem that i think the Doctor will have when it comes to his identity and purpose is this: the man who denies his true name, has now taken apart his myth, and is now clearly not travelling with Amy and Rory on a constant basis. At the very least, even without name and myth, he should have a companion with him to reflect the Universe back to him - because having given up so much of who he was himself, he doesn't have that inner mirror any more, and that leads down a very dark path, i think. This is why i don't think he is going to do any discovering of this in the first half of series 7, and where i think (hope) the new companion will be pivotal. She will help him once and for all define himself anew post Time-War and help him through whatever this huge horror is that surrounds his old name/identity. Facing up to his old identity will help him find his new one. If the new companion is crucial in this, it asks some very interesting questions about who she might be.
