Wondering how he turned up in this story....

Onward with the 3rd Half (or third) of my Gally 2011 report. Picking things up from Saturday night we cut to the next morning:

More Pics and Info

Sunday:

I managed to sleep in by 30 minutes. Because of this I ran late and missed the Prop Making 101 panel. vandonovan, my GF and I spent a while packing up. I manged to lose a few things and relocate them all in the space of an hour with the exception of my spare Sonic Screwdriver. It simply wasn't to be found. Which was really annoying!

I suited up again as Four, because hey it's comfy. I dropped a few changes of clothes for myself in the Cosplay Hall. Then I swept through the Dealer's room to pick up soe Con T-shirts, vintage pins/buttons and Tom Baker Tin for my friend and his son who couldn't make it.

Van meanwhile suited up as a Blue Power Ranger for kicks. I eventually ran into him and we got some pretty amusing pics together at tardis_tara's TARDIS. On a further cross-universe costume note- a big shout out goes to the Avon and Servelan of Blake's 7 I saw wandering around as well. Kudos!

I went back to the Dealer Room and finally got Janet Fielding's autograph on my 20th Anniverasy poster. I felt bad because I'd tried to do this the previous day but when I discovered my GF still had my debit card and I was out of cash I was forced to skip it. Anyway Janet was nice but a little loopy. I told her it was nice of her to fight her cold and attend Time Quest last March. "Time what?" she asked. I reminded her. "Was I even AT that one? Really?" Derek from 10th Planet assured her she was. He mentioned something that jogged her memory. "Oh riiiight! I can't even tell anymore. Well I'll sign this for you even though you're dressed as TOM and not Peter!" She nearly signed my poster to "Tom" actually! And then she stopped at her own signature. "Bless me, I can't even remember my own name!" She laughed, took a moment and got over her forgetfulness and finished signing. "Well bless ya Bob, Good day to you." Very strange indeed. I'll chalk it up to the jet lag and a late night.

This was apparantly a much better encounter than what happened to minervamoon when she met her previously in her Five Doctors Tegan Dress. The surrounding fans and guests all complimented her outfits and then Janet simply turned to her and said "That's not my dress! My dress was made of silk! My shoes were yellow AND orange! And peep-toe!" Nothing like getting approval from the stars huh? I'd like to chalk that up to Janet's sense of humor but honestly, who knows?

The Not Silk Five Doctors Dress

As I was walking away John Levene was leaving his end of the table and he approached to apologize for missing the Masque but he asked for a video of the skit which we will delive ron soon. He mentioned a bit about his upcoming project that sounded very interesting and we promised to stay in touch.

Afterwards I popped my head into the Torchwood panel modded by estelofimladris, scifichix Scifichix, Crystal Melton and Jessica Montague. It seemed to be going well. I had to stash some of these items I'd just bought. Finally I stopped in the ops room and managed to track down the woman who'd borrowed my scarf. I was led to the Green Room to retreive it when I bumped into Neill Gorton and Paul Salamoff. I had a nice brief chat with both. I feel bad I never had a proper sit down with Neill to discuss his work but there just wasn't the time.

In the midst of this we were handing out our Sunday Ribbons in the wake of our new skit "Proud Member of the Monster Society of Evil!" If anyone's interested I have a FEW of them left (that was buried in a spare pocket) if anyone wishes to add to thier badge post-con. post or PM if you want one of the leftovers!

Sunday/Monster ribbons

As I wandered around I bumped into a Terminus Nyssa and Turlough (Mags and Whiz Kid from Friday), I got my autograph ticket at long last thanks in large part to vandonovan letting me join him further up the line. I recall having a discussion with Athena and her BF abut the merits and otherwise of Moffatt's vs RTD's take on Dr. Who. I think we had to agree to disagree.

Terminus Nyssa and Turlough

Now it was about Noon. vandonovan, my GF and I finally did the last check and pack up and left to load up our cars. In the elevator I ran into John Leeson again who apologized about missing the Masquerade but due to the jet lag he'd passed out in his room about 7:30PM! I promised I'd e-mail him a youtube link once we had the sketch up and assured him his contribution helped us tremendously. Once down in the parking lot, loading up the car this time was faster and painless than I'd expected.

dragoniching as Eleven

With that behind us we could enjoy the rest of the day. Back in the lobby, I ran into azarsuerte sporting her Femme Jack costume and whispersecho in her Fenric Ace. dragoniching apprached me in his Eleven costume if I still wanted to borrow his Seven Sweater. Being inspired by the graphic Pickenprod and davidnagel (from Gallifrey Base) knocked together for the McCoy Sweater flyer (seen below).

The Flyer Graphic which inspired the Sweater shots

I decided to have some fun and try and get other Doctor posing with one of these sweaters from the 1st run. Now I wish I'd started on this on Friday, as this was the 1st Gally I'd seen all 11 Doctor represented in cosplay form (albeit there were no Male Sixes though) without me having to organize such a group. I could have had all 11 doctors sporting this sweater vest. But oh well. For the record Five, Ten and Elven ruled the school Doctors wise. There were according to my memory: 2 Ones, 3 Twos, 2 Threes, around 8 Fours, 12 Fives, 3 Sixes (femme), 5 Sevens, 7 Eights, 3 nines, over 12 Tens, about 11-12 Elevens (and 1 Cushing!) Anyway, dragoniching agreed to bring me his sweater and he did so in quick time while Teri and I chatted with whispersecho and azarsuerte.

Time Lords just chatting

As we walked back into the con proper I was surprised to see Sarah Sutton signing at her own table in the front lobby. I guess she'd been aware of the autograph issues and had taken it on herself to sit at an open front table and do some extra signing 'off the schedule' There's was only a small line so I quickly fumbled for my 500 Year Diary which she happily signed for me. Bonus!

My Diary/autograph book gets even more use at Gally 2011

K9 returns to the TARDIS

No Nevermind. Been there done that. Affirmative.

Following this I found stevericks in his Nine Jacket. Turns out this was a lucky online thrift buy and a vintage WWII jacket to boot! I also found E-Wan in his Eleven gear and had them both pose wearing the sweater goofing off and mocking up the poses form the graphic. Fun times. Later after dragoniching got his sweater back I kept mine out so I could pose with it myself as Four and later Ffarflav as Eight. Seven's Fashion lives on!

Go Team

Yeaahhh why did we ever wear these again?

I wear a Question Mark Sweater again. Question Mark sweaters are cool.

Oh what the Hell. Eight Rocks the nostalgia of his previous self.

Four isn't happy to be saddled with the question marks. This ain't Season 18 y'know.

At the same time I was there doing these sweater shots Lela in a Season 15 Leela outfit (which turned out to be tardis_tara's from back in her early con going days) got some shots with me so we could complete the TARDIS crew!

Take 2

On my way back to the cosplay Hall I bumped into wicked0witch, Matt Hearn and a table full of Amy Ponds. The scene was amusing so I tred getting some candid shots only to find they are were to well aware of me and starting 'posing' candidly. In every shot they're literally saying 'Chat chat chat chat' because I asked them to "just keep chatting."

The real candid- You want us to what?

Once I got back too the Cosplay Hall I had too change quickly into my D84 Robot costume. Thankfully, flibertyjibitz had remembered to bring the pop-up changing which was a life saver. I decided to give it one last outing because I'd previously run into Josh Friedman who'd told me I HAD too be at the Podshock panel in this outfit as some surprise guests would love it. And I thought it would make a funny picture with Peter Davison.

Because of the timing I missed the Murray's Gold Panel hosted by ceejay10 and my friend Ramie among others. I heard it was a great panel despite the lack of sound system. I hope to catch this next year.

In the middle of changing I finally found oldeworldsmith who agreed to to take some shots in the Seven Sweater for me as Ten. flibertyjibitz ran off with him to do this while I finished up as the schedule was tightening around me. They got all manner of shots from jumping to mimicking the graphic again. Fun stuff!

Ten Wonders how he'll explain the new look to Rose.

But it's preeeettty spiffy huh?

So I did a little roaming as the Robot and suitably creeped some people out. I got a few pictures doing a 'team-up' style thing with Bryan in his awesome Ood costume. Old and New Who unite!

Getting to the end of the Photo Cue to see who should be keeping watch but a Dalek!

I finally made my way to the Peter Davison Photo cue and I have to say it moved pretty fast. Not too bad of a wait at all. As I walked in Peter spotted me and his mouth dropped "Well I don't think I've ever been attacked by one of YOU before!" He moved to put his arm around me but I managed to get in a more menacing postion and he got it right away. The photographer gave me a little grief about this pose for some reason but I *think* it was just this guy's deadpan humor. At least I hope so. Anyway the picture was awesome. Check it out:

The 5th Doctor is shocked to turn up in the wrong story.

On the way out I ran into minervamoon who walked with me around the back hallway. She suddenly yelled at me "Bob, move to the side" Okaaay WHICH side? I dunno, so I moved to my right. I felt something kinda brush by me. "No no wait I meant your OTHER side!" Oh right, yeah I knew that. (wearing these helmets means you have tunnel vision!) Then she grabbed me and said "You just slammed into Frazer Hines. He tried to slow up behind you to move around and then you crashed right into him! He must be seeing stars!" Well hey I honestly couldn't tell! "I could barely feel him, are you sure?" I said. "He probably saw stars." Whoops.

Podshock Panel

As asked I popped into the Podshock panel (a live podcast no less) as the VOC Robot. I bumped into the guy who had done the White Robot and Quark costumes and we talked about doing monster costumes and the hurdles it entails. I watched the Cush Jumbo and Tracie Simpson interviews. I caught a very funny video where many Who cast members plugged podshock including Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.

As D84 at the Podshock Panel.

Turns out one of the surprise guests was Pamela Salem (Toos from Robots of Death as well as appearing in Remembrance of the Daleks). They'd wanted me to walk her on stage! BUT it was not to be. I didn't know this was thier plan until a bit later. And at 3:05 I knew I had to make my way back to get Peter's autograph. So I missed the moment there.

On the way out I bumped again in violet_lane, oldeworldsmith, stevericks and Teri. I guess they were waiting to see the surprise guests too. Around this time I was bumping into more folks who were asking where to sign up or e-mail for the Seven Sweater run and I was glad it was getting some notice. I pointed them all to the Cosplay Hall and by the end of the con we got around 8-10 new sign ups. I know several flyers disappeared too so I hope more will trickle in via e-mail in the coming weeks so we can reach the 100 needed there. As of this writing, we've reached 85 sign ups so slowly but surely we're doing an impossible thing before breakfast.

Waiting in line for my autographs. Photo by Van Donovan

Out of the panel, I ended up bouncing back and forth trying to get in the autograph line but being part of Group 4 meant I wasn't allowed in til more like 3:30pm. I wish I'd known that then! Anyway I finally got in line which still took something like 45-60 minutes to go through. But I was patient and I probably made an odd sight being this VOC Robot calmly holding my Who books and posters to be signed. A VOC Robot is patient if anything else! vandonovan took some pics of me in line actually- pretty amusing. I also saw farflav in line and I asked how many items he was getting signed. When he said none, I handed him two extra items I was going to try to have signed but I quickly saw they were strictly enforcing the 2 item-only rule. Lucky for me, he was there so I was able to get signatues for myself, my friend's son and a co-worker I'd run into who missed out getting her autograph ticket. So thanks again farflav!

Handbook

Extra Davison Autograph

I got Frazer to re-sign my 500 Year Diary (and he was nice enough to tell me when I'd dropped by badge, so I guess she didn't hold that hip-check in the hallway against me!). Sarah Sutton signed my 5th Doctor handbook. When I got to Peter he signed my book and poster. Though I have to say the way he signed my poster .... makes me wonder if he was intentionally trying to make the 5th Doctor look a bit err... excited? to see Tegan with the placement of his signature? See for yourself:

Davison's suggestive signature.

I ran through the line and got Jane Espenson (I wished I'd had a minute to chat with her about Firefly but... in that costume it would have pathetically funny to try), Gareth Robert, Clayton Hickman and several others to sign my Diary. They were all pretty amused by my costume and were happy to make out signatures "To D84" or "Please do not Throw Hands at Me" Oh well hey- at least I made the experience memorable for them!

Gareth Roberts Autograph

Clayton Hickman Autograph

While in line I'd been told that Pamela Salem was signing utside in the lobby. I had a second chance to run by! Well I was sweating to death by this point and I nearly changed out of the costume without thinking. Then I remembered, and duly stashed my items, grabbed my camera and stopped by the autograph line. Her handler pulled me aside and asked me to come around the table. I did and Pamela jolted up upon seeing me 'So you DO exist!" I guess the Podshock guys told her about me. Her handler took what felt like 5 or 6 photos on thier camera of us and grabbed one for me before we turned around to the line of fans for another round of pics. "Somehow this all feels very familiar" she said. She was very sweet and complimented my outfit which was nice.

D84 back to terrorize Pamela Salem

I saw Waris Huessin (another Podshock surprise guest) and Daphne Ashbrook were also signing. Bonus! So I ran back to the Cosplay Hall, Changed into my street clothes (the first time I'd been in regular clothes my whole time at the con so far!), grabbed my 500 year Diary to be signed... only to find I had no cash again. I ran to the cash machine only to remember Teri still had my debit card! It was fast approaching 5PM and I knew they'd be wrapping soon. Lucky for me, tardis_tara now had the cash for the Six Necktie I sold her and it was exactly enough to pay the VERY reasonable fees they were charging for non-Photo items. Result!

Pamela Salem Autograph

I caught Waris just as he was getting up to leave (and I got to sputter some kind of muddled thanks for helping this awesome show at it's humble beginnings), Pamela was very nice and I caught her as she was packing up too. She thanked me again for stopping by in costume once I told her who I was. Finally I made my way to Daphne's table and she asked me who to sign it to "bob." "Bob! Great name. Forthright name! I like it!" She signed her name and I told her my friend owned the TVM TARDIS Console if she was ever up for a photoshoot. "Is that Paul? I'm neighbors with him! Yeah I should totally do that!" I mentioned I had a replica of the Eight costume and could supply a McGann stand-in if need be (making it clear it would NOT be me!) and she said 'Really? You put together the whole outfit? You know what color the coat was then?" "Oh yeah, it was GREEN!" I replied. My past meeting with Mcgann had served me well folks!

Yeah yeah I know it's flippin Green already.

Waris Huessin Autograph

Daphne Ashbrook autograph

In the midle of all this, I missed the final MFX panel which is a bummer. They were the cloest representatives to offical BBC costuming so I wish I'd been there to hear some tips. Oh well, I know flibertyjibitz made most of them so I'll plan to pick her brain later. As I walked back I ran into stevericks one last time who was heading for the airport. He gave me my Ten Coat and we made our goodbyes. It was great to see him as always.

Finally I ended up lounging in the Cosplay Hall with E-Wan, flibertyjibitz, oldeworldsmith, ceejay10, violet_lane, ninjarisu, minervamoon, vandonovan, batfriend, & Teri. We goofed off and took a ton of odd pictures while I took down the TARDIS wall backdrops with the help of Teri, Michael (the Delgado Master often seen around), and ninjarisu.

Teri and E-Wan hanging in the Cosplay Hall.

Vandonovan doing the happy face

E-Wan Teri and flibertyjibitz listening intently

minervamoon and I both tried to take pictures at each other in the exact same moment of flash.. And that... didn't work out. We took a bunch of timer photos trying for sad faces, and happy faces. The results are amusing. If anything I think we all look wiped out!

Trying and failing to get each other's flash. But clearing knocking batfriend unconsious in the process.

minervamoon shared a funny story about when she met Sarah Sutton in the main Lobby when she did her additional signing. At the time minervamoon was in her Terminus Nyssa outfit and was also hanging out with the other Traken Nyssa (Katharine aka the Ricketandoo) who'd I'd met at the previous Gally. So after minervamoon asked Sarah Sutton for a photograph with the three of them together she thought how funny! "Look, I'm Sarah too! And we're both small. And…we're both NYSSA." To which apparantly Sarah Sutton had a 'is this a crazy person?' look on her face and said "eh... yeeeah." Although she took the photo anyway of course! "So we're ALL Nyssa" we said to that. "We're all Nyssa" I think is our new catchphrase for 2011.

And we're ALL Nyssa! Photo by minervamoon

We watched over some of the footage we got of the masque and our skit. Again we'd had a lack of feedback over Sunday so it was nice to get to affirmation all our efforts weren't for nothing.

Batfriend working out some figures

I recall making a quick trip to tardis_tara's TARDIS one last time to talk about the old days of 80's Who cons and get some last photos by her TARDIS as they had started to take it down. Batfriend, Adrian and I got some 'attacked by the Dalek plunger' shots which were goofy. I got my tweed jackets back from Tara who despite several close calls was unable to find them a new home. Oh well. They'll be re-listed in my next sales post when I have more spare items to move.

Attacked by the plunger!

Exhausted.

Timer Camera- HAPPY Faces! Photo by Minervamoon

Back in the Cosplay Hall, we all chatted away til to got pretty late. Whether it was due to tiredness, or being in the moment, we totally missed Closing Ceremonies. I hear they're ran late but it passed us by. Oh well. We tidied up the room more or less in the shape it was in when we found it. violet_lane and oldeworldsmith said their goodbyes as they had an early plane to catch back home. I took down all the flyers and packed up the last of the spare costumes items and and we all headed out to load the last of it in my car. Walking throgh the halls felt a bit sad now most traces of the con had disappeared in the Marriot halls. I'll give them credit for a fast dismantling job!

Various Costume goodies that had to be packed up and hauled to the car.

Getting ready to go

Flibbertyjibbitz gave me a lot of grief for how PACKED my car was but hey - it did the job, no complaints from me! ninjarisu returned the eleven items I'd loaned him on Sat for photo study (topman trousers, all saints boots and the wig). minervamoon then said her goodbyes as she had a plane to catch. I ran into dragoniching one last time to find he and his GF were waiting for a cosplay meet-up for an Inception group. So was this con a dream within a dream within a dream after all? :)

Typical view at Lobbycon

We bumped into kgaleway and whispersecho along with one of Adrian's friends so the 10 of us (Teri, myself, batfriend, flibertyjibitz, ninjarisu, E-Wan plus the previously mentioned) ventured out for one last dinner. Tired of Champions we walked to Denny's only to find the wait was over an hour. (Although I saw James Moran waiting for a table here which was an odd coincidence!).

Not cutting it on Sunday night.

We switched quickly to the Daily Grill a further block down and it was totally the right move. They seated us right away. The food was good and the atmopshere nice.

Much better choice

We learned this year had really grown with approx 2200 attendees! Amazing! No wonder the autograph lines had such problems. Consequently we also determined there was probably around 250 cosplayers total.. maybe more like 300 if you count all the varius costume changes going on. This was yet again another doubling up of the number the previous year. Out of all the costumes Amy Pond was far and away the most cosplayed! On Friday alone if you threw a rock you'd hit 10 of them! Strangely enough though for ALL the Amys that were around, NONE of them got any portrait photography which we found odd. We all agreed the Masque and the general socializing connecting to other cosplayers were our big highlights from this year's con. We talked cosplay, Caprica, scifi and forum gossip.

Amazing Key Lime Pie

At the end of the night our end of the table splurged on some desserts. Teri and I split a Key Lime Pie which was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Simply delish. If anyone has a Daily Grill near them I recommend you give it a try sometime. You'll thank me later. That seemed the perfect note to end the weekend and the con. We all were feeling more wiped out than ever. We stumbled back to the hotel where we all made our goodbyes. The post-con malaise was setting in. Ack.

Saying goodbye to the Marriott and Gally 22.

Teri and I drove home and managed to find just enough energy to unpack the car before passing out in bed. Boy were we thankful the next day was a Holiday free form work!

My best friends 36 hours after Gally.

The only bad post scripts to that weekend was first hearing about the sad passing of Nicholas Courtney on Monday. Second, on Tuesday I came down with my first bona fide Con Crud case of a horrible flu. I was bed ridden for 4-5 days with the worst fever I'd had in years. Argh! Oh well, no matter, I'm finally back on my feet now and looking to new costuming projects for down the line.

Sad note to end the weekend.

On the plus side, I finally found my spare Classic Sonic Screwdriver in a costume pocket once I unpacked everything so nothing was lost after all!

To bring things full circle about how one experiences or views Dr. Who over the years I'd like to re-post something I poste don the Prydon board a few months back. Keep in mind I started watching Dr. Who in 1983 when i was 6 years old. I didn't turn into a full 'fanboy' or dive into the mythology until 1989 when I turned 12. So let's step into the wayback machine or your personal TARDIS and see how the series looked my child mind's point of view (pre-internet mind you- one had to figure this show OUT in the old days):

10 things from my 6-9 year old/child's view of Dr. Who in the 1980's thanks to out of order omnibus/movie showings of the series and a vivid imagination:

1. Doctor Who is a guy with curly hair and a scarf. The grey haired guy in the velvet jacket is his dad. The blonde beige guy is his younger brother. The clown looking one is the crazy uncle. The Three Stooges Moe guy is the distant cousin. Must be like a family of Doctors. (I knew better by the time I saw McCoy and Hartnell)

Family of Doctors

2. I thought Dr. Who was on the Days of Our Lives once as an assassin. I assumed an alien was lurking in disguise on the show. Made me watch that darn Soap Opera for about a week til I figured out the assassin I saw merely looked like Tom Baker. It wasn't him. There was no cool Dr. Who crossovers going on during my Mom's soaps. (well the production value looked the same!)

Like sands through the hourglass...

3. If we ever see what's at the end of the Time Tunnel - it will show us either: what the TARDIS looks like when it's not a Police Box (I SO wanted to see what it really looked like!) or the end of the universe/end of time. I was convinced it would only be shown in the end credits because I often fell asleep before the endings and my Dad would have to tell me what happened the next morning. Imagine my disappointment when iIfinally managed to stay up to see the credits and saw nothing at the end of the tunnel. (Well it must be in the LAST episode of the series they'll show us what's at the end of the Time Tunnel then!)

http://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/images/cult/cult_who/titleseqs/doctorwho1973el.jpg
Tunnel

4. The Doctor's Time Traveling affects the length of the episode. I never understood why the show (in Movie omnibus format) wasn't 1 hour like US shows. And why sometimes it was 90 minutes and often was over 2 hours. I assumed the TARDIS was somehow affecting the TV or run time. It was like a magic show not bound by conventional rules. This goes doubly so for lack of commercials. (Yay for PBS.)

Time is relative to the Doctor

5. Greatest Disappointment moment: Thinking I was getting to watch a Tom Baker episode and then seeing him change into Peter Davison in the pre-titles to Castrovalva. Cheated! On the plus side I finally understood regeneration and why there are different Doctors.

Alright! Hey what? Awwwwwww..... DISSAPPOINTED!

6. The Doctor is famous throughout the known universe because all of his faces have been made into constellations by alien societies as shown in the opening titles.

Known throughout the universe

7. Anything Green = Impending Doom or Danger. (Especially in a Dalek incubation room)

Green = bad

8. Daleks are angry futuristic trash cans looking to get back at people for all the garbage we throw in them.

Dalek Ancestor

9. The theme tune is so errie and strange to me that I assumed it must have been recorded in outer space or another dimension and sent to us through a radio telescope or the TARDIS. Bascially I figured the Doctor somehow provided a genuine alien tune he liked to be the theme of his show. Seemed to fit his personality anyway!

Where the theme tune was recorded

10. No matter what happens, or how weird things get, the universe is in safe hands when the Doctor's around. This goes doubly so when it's the good one with the scarf.

The Good One with the scarf.

(Also I've gone through a lot of Flickr and Facebook galleries to fill in a lot of gaps I had when I either didn't have a camera on me or needed a better shot. If you see your photo and wish to have a credit or to have it removed then post or PM me and I'll do so accordingly. Also if you see a photo and want a larger size version (and it came off my camera or Scott's portraits) then PM me and I'll send you a link.)

Til next year! Photo by Scott Sebring

So what else can I say about this fabulous fan grown con that celebrates our favorite show? Well it was exhausting but tremendously awesome con as always. Shaun and his committee of organizers and volunteers delivered another great weekend for Dr. Who fans despite the hiccups that comes from growing pains. It was great seeing everyone, meeting old friends and seeing new faces. I look forward to doing it all again next year!

'Til 2012!
