Non-coherent thoughts from a sleepy con-goer: The Gallifrey Report Part 1
Thought I would get my con report over with now. I wrote the Friday report the morning after and am too lazy to change it so it will sound a bit different that the rest.
THURSDAY
Got to the hotel around 4:30 and was greeted by my lovely fellow team mates scifichicx (Ianto) and xanmuse (tosh). We loaded all our crap into our room and hung out into the lobby for a bit. We met some Doctor Who fans and conversation eventually moved to Torchwood and then to Owen Harper...there lies danger. I only had five insults for liking Owen which is less then usual. People, it's cool if you hate the character, but don't walk up to an Owen cosplayer and tell them how much you hate him. Especially if you then get confused when they aren't thrilled to hear you bash him.
Eventually estelofimladris (Jack) and hystericblue42 (Gwen) showed up so the whole team was together again. We dicked around the lobby for a bit longer while estel and I worked on our costumes. We then met up with James Moran (writer of "Sleeper" and "Fires of Pompeii") who we missed very much from last year. He introduced us to a slightly drunk and very sleepy Kai Owen who was very nice and we said hello to Gareth who remembered us from Comic con. We ended up having drinks with James and Simon Guerrier until about three in the morning when we all passed out from exhaustion.
FRIDAY (written early Saturday morning)
Ok this won't make any sense and I'm tired as hell but wanted people to know that con is going lovely. I am mildly hung over after having a few drinks with James Moran and Tony Lee last night, Tony wearing his usual suit and James having the softest hands of any man I've ever met (note to self, he stares a bit if you call him "lady fingers"). All of yesterday was a bit of a blur but I do remember seeing many old friends and many costumes which is nice because in the past my "team" and I have been pretty much the only Torchwood cosplayers. It's pretty much a sea of Iantos, Jacks, and Gwens, I saw one other Tosh besides Alex and I was the only Owen but that's ok.
Being con staff I actually had to do some work yesterday but I did eventually get to meet up with Gareth's manager Lisa who I just have to say is such an amazing woman! Gareth was very nice as usual and his girlfriend is very pretty and though I barely spoke to her she seemed nice as well. Kai was lovely though it was difficult to see him sober. Kai and Gareth's panel was great and Naoko made a surprise apperance. She remembered us from comic con as well and squeed when she saw us which made us all feel amazingly special. We got to get pics of her with our Tosh finally because pics weren't allowed at comic con.
James had his "Fires of Pompeii" live commentary which unfortunately had technically difficulties and eventually devolved into just a Q &A when the video stoped working but James trucked on and didn't seem too nervous. I saw the first half but had to leave early to start perparing for the Toga Party we were running later that night.
My team and various lovely volunteers (who I owe my life and my first born) were in charge of the Toga party which went off very well. As I'm sure it will be mentioned many times Kai and Gareth did a skit for us, they were drunk and hadn't read the script so that was amusing as hell. My friends playing Captain Jack, Captian John, and the sisters of Pompeii were playing opposite them and a good chunk of those people had to be kissed by a drunken Gareth which was pretty fucking funny to watch. After the sketch Tony Lee helped entertain people with a very amusing game. Can I just mention how much I love Tony Lee? He wrote the "Forgotten" Doctor Who comics and is a horrible man.
There was Karaoke later and Kai (who was at this point having trouble speaking coherently) graced us with a few songs. He taught us the chorus for "Hymes and Arias" so we could join in while he sang it. He then sang the Welsh national anthem and I must admit the man has a beautiful voice. After that he left and returned to the bar where we presented him with a welsh flag sticker for his con badge which he seemed very happy to recieve. I think the exact quote was "I GOTTA FUCKIN' GET ME ONE O' THEM!"
Estel had to head to bed early cause she had a panel she was doing in the morning but scifichix and I stayed up till about 4 drinking with Simon, James, Tony, and other people whose name I can't remember at this moment.
