I was actually getting ready for school and thought the news coverage was a trailer for a movie or something. It wasn't until my parents were like, "OMG somebody accidentally flew into one of the buildings in New York." that it became a real news story for me. Then the second plane hit and we knew then that it wasn't an accident. I was lucky enough not to have any friends or family in the buildings. We did however have a close family friend in the DC area so we were concerned when the Pentagon was hit. My school didn't make too much of a big deal out of it. It being a private school, we prayed and then went about our daily business. But now, being older I think of it much clearly instead of making bets that the terrorists would strike the White House next.
Years ago my dad asked me what two things are marker points in my memory in terms of global events. Moments that marked my viewpoint of history. I told him 9/11 and Princess Di's death. I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news of both. Each one I will never forget. Each one will be something I tell me grandchildren when they're learning about it in history class. It's weird to think back now and know that 9/11 is in history books. At the time it didn't seem that remarkable. Oh, a terrorist attack on the other side of the country. To my younger mind I guessed I was uneffected by it. Little did I know that I would spend the next years of my life living in a country that was at war.
