"...I do not fear either death or pain."

What Do You Fear, Lady?

She stands alone.
Though of gifted tongue
and sharp mind,
she cannot find expression.

Happy enough in her life
she may seem,
but to those in her circle
she is marked a doll.

For she wears a mask
and does not know
of the tortures and
pleasures of a life lived.

The world is secretly denied
to this porcelain figure.
For all her knowledge
she fails to see this fact.

With lensed eyes
and a fearful mouth
she wanders through
the society that holds her.

You may look upon
her serene face and
say "Poor little bird.
Locked inside her innocence."

But if you asked her
she would say
that she loved her life
and the ease it brings.

But the saddest part
is that when a man asked:
What do you fear, lady?
She replied:

A cage.

Credit for the "What do you fear, lady?"/"A cage..." line goes to the great JRR Tolkien. (Return of the King, Book Five, Chapter 2)
